The MMLA’s permanent section on American Literature After 1870 invites papers which, building on the conference theme, examine the topic of “post-book” American literature. In an 1868 essay, John William De Forest first used the term “The Great American Novel,” which has had an outsized impact on the American literary imagination ever since. This panel asks how the term applies in an age of sophisticated narratives that often live outside of the printed page, or in transmedia combinations with the printed page. While acknowledging the continuing importance of print texts both old and new, our panel seeks papers that examine the changes to literary analysis, objects, and pedagogy associated with a contemporary “post book” orientation.

This “Faulkner and Ward” conference invites proposals for 15-20 minute papers on any topic related to William Faulkner and/or Jesmyn Ward.  All critical approaches, including pedagogical, are welcomed.  We are particularly interested in inter-textual approaches that treat both authors. Proposals for organized panels are also encouraged.

Call for Chapter Proposals:  

Decolonizing Media and Communication Studies Education in Africa  

We are seeking abstracts (250 words maximum) together with a short biography and subsequently 6,000 word chapters for an edited book that explores the topic of decolonizing media and communication education in Africa.

Despite forming the basis for many cultural and political norms in the world today, sexuality is also that which resists easy normativity. In addition to agitating for change in the form of legal rights, critical thinking on non-conforming sexualities has also raised the question of sexuality itself as non-conformist. This latter strand of thinking allows us to think of sexuality as always having alternatives, and also being alternative to fixed forms of itself. This theorisation considers sexuality both from the political perspective from which it is often studied, and also from the perspective of literature and the arts.

The aftermath of societal and cultural traumas can be cause for growth, hope, change, and (r)evolution. The last two years have brought the world to such moments. Questions may arise such as: What is the role of Children’s and Young Adult Literature within and after such traumas? How do events such as war or pandemic cause reflection and change on societal, cultural, and/or individual levels? We seek papers that explore all aspects of Children’s and Young Adult Literature, as well as those addressing the conference theme of Post Now.

This Roundtable discussion welcomes submissions on any aspect of pre-pandemic college classroom access, post-pandemic college classroom access, or policies implemented in college classrooms post-pandemic which could limit access. Abstracts addressing the conference theme are especially welcome.  Due to the pandemic, instructors have all felt the strain change placed on our classrooms. However, these changes have brought to light important aspects of access at the university level previously regulated to individual or case-by-case discussions. This roundtable seeks to generate a wider conversation about how instructors handle access in the classroom, and what has improved or hindered access.
