Streaming and Screen Culture in Asia-Pacific

In the creation of nation-states during the 19th and 20th century, standardized and official languages were of key importance to develop feelings of belonging to social collectivities through the public sphere. However, contemporary global neoliberal conditions have put pressure on Romantic notions such as belonging, togetherness and culture, that used to be seen as the building blocks of national identity. Postcolonial and decolonial debates have, furthermore critiqued the presumed monolingual character of communities and nations (Yildiz 2012; Mignolo 2003) by pointing to their linguistic heterogeneity.

To the surprise of analyst expectations, at the end of 2019 Netflix recorded a record-high growth in subscribers and revenue outside of the United States, specifically in its Asia-Pacific region. The growth in this region is attributed to the establishment of regional offices and the commissioning of local productions, the success of which travels even further afield in the wealth of pan-Asian content making its way into Netflix’s global catalogue. Streaming and content partnerships with iQiyi (China), jtbc (South Korea), Fuji TV (Japan) and Dharmatic Entertainment (India), for instance, have also helped Netflix establish itself as a brand with a focus on a global audience.

The intersection between nurses and popular media is longstanding.

The next issue of 'Archives of emotions' aims to explore the interactions between language and emotions. By 'language', we generally mean a system of signs. Since ancient times, rhetorical strategies of emotions have been known and practiced. We will, therefore, ask ourselves how literature, in each age, manages to represent, simulate, reproduce and arouse, through written and oral language, the experience of emotion and its cognitive, physiological and psychological bases. Possible subjects for the essays collected in this issue could also concern the performing and visual arts, dance, cinema, and theater and their respective languages.

We appreciate that everyone is operating in a state of uncertainty, and with many more personal, professional and family demands on their time than usual. It is impossible at this stage to predict what travel will look like in September, but we recognise that colleagues are not comfortable making arrangements for future travel until things become clearer.

The Comparative Literature section of the MMLA invites proposals for papers that engage with this year's conference theme, "Cultures of Collectivity." Papers addressing the following suggested MMLA topics from a transnational, cross-cultural, and/or interdisciplinary perspective would be particularly relevant:

• collective movements throughout the history of art and culture;
• the formation of communities through bibliography and scholarship;
• language communities; cultures of diaspora;
• academic communities
