American Art and Architecture Call for Papers

 

PCA/ACA National Convention

Atlanta 2006

 

The Art and Architecture Area of the American Culture Association

is seeking proposals for papers for the PCA/ACA Annual Conference

in Atlanta, April 12 to 15, 2006.

 

Any aspect of American Visual Culture will be considered. Open Sessions are

scheduled along with Theme Sessions.

 

Proposals for papers for three and four person panels on any topic related to Art and Architecture in North America may be submitted by e-mail to either the A&A Area Chair or to the Theme Session Chairs noted below.

We are very pleased that the Society for the Study of the History of the English Language (SSHEL) will be sponsoring two sessions at the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo next year (May 4-7, 2006).

A New Book of Morses: Encoding Joyce in the 21st Century.

The celebration of the one-hundredth anniversary of Bloomsday marked a high
point for Joyce Studies and for the scholars who have published and lectured on
James Joyce over the past half a century. Their work has also provided a solid
foundation for new research and fresh approaches to the study of Joyce's
writing. It is in the spirit of such research that we are compiling a book
called A New Book of Morses: Encoding Joyce in the 21st Century, which will be
published by Rodopi as part of their European Joyce Studies series.

This panel will explore the ways in which the logic of contract and the
rhetoric of promise permeate and organize British culture in the eighteenth
century. Victoria Kahn's Wayward Contracts is one of the more noteworthy
recent studies that interpret the ways in which this logic and rhetoric
contribute to cultural formation. Her formulation of contract as a "new
poetics of the subject" is one of many possible engagements with this
theme.
In the past decade the cultural, marriage, mimetic, sociable, social and
racial contracts have received comment and analysis.
