We are very pleased that the Society for the Study of the History of the English Language (SSHEL) will be sponsoring two sessions at the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo next year (May 4-7, 2006).
1. Regular Session: "Multilingualism: Linguistic, Historical, Cultural, and Literary Approaches." This session aims to explore links between multilingualism, cultural practices, and social identities in medieval England. We invite papers that combine methods in linguistics or language studies with methods in literary theory or cultural studies in order to investigate multilingualism and its links to gender/sexuality, community or nation in medieval England.

A New Book of Morses: Encoding Joyce in the 21st Century.
The celebration of the one-hundredth anniversary of Bloomsday marked a high
point for Joyce Studies and for the scholars who have published and lectured on
James Joyce over the past half a century. Their work has also provided a solid
foundation for new research and fresh approaches to the study of Joyce's
writing. It is in the spirit of such research that we are compiling a book
called A New Book of Morses: Encoding Joyce in the 21st Century, which will be
published by Rodopi as part of their European Joyce Studies series.

Conference Theme:
We are seeking previously unpublished critical original poetry for Mantis 5,
under the broad theme of "Poetry and Discipline."
Mantis is a journal of contemporary poetry, poetry translation and poetry
criticism. A forum for writers coming from a broad spectrum of intellectual
and aesthetic positions, Mantis is dedicated to publishing new work that
interrogates the relationships among critical writing, creative writing, and
translation.
Call for Papers: 2005 Louisiana English Journal; Focus: Grammar

The Louisiana English Journal (LEJ) aids Louisiana's kindergarten through college English language arts teachers by providing a forum for the exchange of practical classroom ideas and methodology, and by showcasing creative writing. An annual, published forum for members of the Louisiana Council of Teachers of English, the Louisiana English Journal supports the research contributions and stimulates an on-going dialogue
between elementary, middle, and secondary teachers; supervisors of English programs; college and university faculty; teacher educators;local and state agency English specialists; and professionals in related fields.
This panel will explore the ways in which the logic of contract and the
rhetoric of promise permeate and organize British culture in the eighteenth
century. Victoria Kahn's Wayward Contracts is one of the more noteworthy
recent studies that interpret the ways in which this logic and rhetoric
contribute to cultural formation. Her formulation of contract as a "new
poetics of the subject" is one of many possible engagements with this
theme.
In the past decade the cultural, marriage, mimetic, sociable, social and
racial contracts have received comment and analysis.
This panel welcomes one to two page proposals that address the history and

The author, writing under the pseudonym Ivan Tribble, claims, among other things, that often the simple practice of maintaining a "blog was a negative" for applicants seeking employment in his department. "The content of the blog," Tribble continues, "may be less worrisome than the fact of the blog itself.

The Edith Wharton Society Essay Prize
Beginning in the fall of 2005, the Edith Wharton Society Essay Prize will be
awarded annually for the best unpublished essay on Edith Wharton by a
beginning scholar. Graduate students, independent scholars, and faculty
members who have not held a tenure-track or full-time appointment for more
than four years are eligible to submit their work.
The winning essay will be published in The Edith Wharton Review, a
peer-reviewed journal, and the writer will receive an award of $250.
