The 2007 Virginia Humanities Conference meets at Christopher Newport
University in Newport News, VA on Friday-Saturday, March 30-31, 2007.
The theme is "Jamestown 2007 and the Invention of America: Reality and
Fiction." VHC invites scholars and artists from all disciplines to
propose papers, panels or similar sessions by mailing, faxing, or

Obsidian III: Literature in the African Diaspora invites scholars from
all fields to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the independence of Ghana.
 The issue is set for publication in the summer of 2007. When Ghana began
the first African nation to gain it independence from England, it not only
set the stage for the liberation of Africa, but it precipitated cultural
changes across the African Diaspora and, indeed, across the globe. Essays
are solicited the literary and cultural legacy of Ghanaian independence in
Ghana, in Africa, in the African Diaspora and throughout the world. We
seek papers on individual works, authors and genres as well previously
unpublished creative works.

"Post-Millennial Queer Pop Culture and the Construction of Community"
A Panel at the 2007 NEMLA Convention in Baltimore Maryland, March 1-4 2007

This panel seeks papers that explore recent queer pop culture (including tv, film, art, comics, porn, music, theater, the internet) and how this pop culture cultivates and/or constructs community. To what extent do these pop culture products make and/or perpetuate assumptions about queer community? To what extent do they reflect the evolution of a queer community? Papers may examine representations of queer life in mainstream popular culture as long as the papers focus on the depiction of queer community.

While James Joyce's Dubliners (1926) is often credited as the first short =
story sequence, or collection of linked short stories reading like a =
novel, and while Sherwood Anderson claimed that he had invented the genre =
with Winesburg, Ohio, sequences by Grace King, Grace Sartwell Mason, and =
Sarah Orne Jewett (and likely others) predate them both. Since then, this =
form of narrative has appealed particularly to women writers who often =
use it to negotiate the tensions between individual identity and community.=
