Work in Displacement Studies lies at the intersection of numerous interdisciplinary fields, such as migration studies, refugee studies, border studies, Indigenous studies, Africana studies, Food Studies, coastal studies, human rights, urban studies, data studies and Latinx studies. Building on that body of literature and the NEH/SSRC working group on “Converging Displacements” at Virginia Tech, this reader takes a critical approach to displacement studies. Critical displacement studies is a methodology examining disruptions of displacement where community access and contribution is essential. An increasingly common experience, being uprooted from place occurs across a range of geographic and temporal scales.

In his travelogue Filibusters in Barbary(1932), the modernist painter and writer Wyndham Lewis evoked the fantasy of being ‘thoroughly unanchored’ from London, from controversy, from recognizability: from his life as he lived it at the time, in effect. The fantasy compels not only because it’s a typically contrarian move made by an unapologetic contrarian, but also because it invites reflection on the very Lewisian problem of autonomy itself.

Intra-African Migration and Kinship Structures: Reframing Afropolitanism

Afropolitanism has generated a great deal of debate and discussion, and many panels on Afropolitanism have been organized at African Literature Association conferences since the first such a panel in 2015.  These discussions often point out how Afropolitan concepts can question national and geographical affiliations and dislodge fixed ideas of belonging in the contemporary world. Too often the scholarship focuses on Africans’ connections to the West, a focus that has provoked significant controversies and disagreements.

ASLE/AESS 2023 Call for Papers - Sponsored by the Oecologies Research Group

Between 1066 and the nineteenth century, the practice of enclosure transformed the economy and ecology of England, as lands traditionally held in common were, through a variety of processes both formal and informal, transformed into private property. Implicated in the development of capitalism and the Agricultural Revolution, the enclosure movement has had a profound influence on how land use is conceptualized and practiced in the modern world.

Though Cather only occasionally wrote about the city, it was her home for nearly forty years and a key element of her personal and professional life.

deadline for submissions:
Tuesday, January 10, 2023

In the aftermath of the spatial turn in literary studies, we look for fresh approaches to Jamesian spaces, material and metaphorical, real and imaginary. James’s texts have explicit spatial dimensions. Whether as settings aesthetically conceived or as sites of cultural, social, and political signification, spaces in James constitute means of thematic as well as formal exploration and even experimentation. From the Roman Colosseum to the “house of fiction” and from the “chamber of consciousness” to the “jolly corner” and the “amazing hotel-world,” James’s literary geography emphatically asserts the dynamic relations between space, subjectivity, and text.
