In a 1926 issue of the Nation, Langston Hughes published his famous essay, “The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain,” a response to George Schuyler’s essay, “Negro Art-Hokum,” wherein Schuyler lampoons the idea of a distinctive African American culture.
