This panel invites papers on the topic of (re)vision—retelling, translating, adapting, re-seeing—literature in ways that engender community empowerment. There are myriad ways to revisit literary texts through new iterations, and it is often through the act of retelling and recrafting that subversive narratives are formed and new communities forged. This panel will explore how retelling a narrative shapes understandings of an original text, the community from which it was created, and the community into which it is being called forth. How can translation produce new entry points for readers into “foreign” texts, cultures, and languages? How might the adaptation of literature foster community across disciplines, ages, cultures, genders, and species?

This issue’s oxymoronic title, “Inconspicuously Fabulous,” calls attention to the generative tensions, limitations, and potentials of visuality as they pertain to minoritarian subjects. What does it mean to present oneself in and as excess while remaining unseen or unnoticed? Like madison moore, who offers a critical queer-of-color reiteration of economist Thorstein Veblen’s concept of “conspicuous consumption” as grotesque public display of economic power and prestige, we think through negotiated visibility as a survival strategy, or a pleasurable and simultaneously risky method of living as a spectacle in the margins.

The American Humor Studies Association (AHSA) invites submissions for a proposed panel for the American Literature Association (ALA) 2027 symposium “Music and the American Literary Imagination,” to be held January 28-30, 2027, in Nashville, TN.

Every act of communication, interpretation, and representation is an act of framing. In literary analysis, a “frame” might define genre, direct narrative perspective, or position a text within a historical moment. In linguistics, frames organize semantic understanding, govern pragmatic interaction, and underpin metaphor. In translation and interpreting, frames are negotiated, shifted, and sometimes shattered in the movement between languages and cultures. They are the selective filters that highlight certain elements while relegating others to the background, the conceptual structures that allow us to categorize, interpret, and communicate complex realities.

The digital infrastructure in today’s world mirrors the colonial administrative structure with its control over data, policing user’s behavior, and pushing narratives for the majoritarian political power. The global tech giants have as much sway in geopolitics as the global leaders themselves. Previously the conditions of colonization created an unequal economic infrastructure that marginalizes the local communities, and even after independence from the colonial power, the trade relations remain that of a colonial appendage. Similarly, the upkeep of the digital sphere is not without its economic and environmental hazards.

This panel invites proposals exploring how rhetoric and composition scholars and teachers can develop what bell hooks, Paulo Freire, and other educators in the field call critical consciousness, or our ability to recognize and analyze oppressive political, economic, and social forces shaping society and to take action. Critical consciousness provides a foundation for cultivating students’ civic reasoning and civic literacy skills across diverse institutional and disciplinary contexts.

At this moment in higher education—as our students wrestle with digital distractions, a deeply competitive job market, rising loneliness, and the complex role of GenAI in their academic lives—it is worth remembering that “educational relationships are central to student learning, motivation, well-being, and persistence” (Jibilian 4 May 2025; Puckett and Felten 2026).

About the Symposium

Description: Since the 1990s, there has been an ever-growing list of adaptions on early modern women, from Elizabeth (1998) to The Tudors, to Reign, to Mary Queen of Scotts (2018), to the countless depictions of Anne Boleyn. Each of these productions attempt to negotiate a happy medium between maintaining historical accuracy and entertaining a modern audience who may not be familiar with or care about the complicated politics of the early modern world. Adaptions of early modern women are not limited to the screen, but can also be found in music, art, and pop culture.

An old dream in world literature studies is to be able to read it all — world enough and time. With large language models, we now have access to information systems that have, in a sense, "read" it all, and that allow us to ask questions we have not been able to ask before. Like the internet, LLMs constitute a global information structure, but one that is more profound in its capacity to inform, interpret, respond, and translate. The development of AI in recent years has provided new infrastructure for academic inquiry with significant implications for world literature as a field.
