Matters of Life: Human Scapes and Scopes

Multiple environmental crises are increasingly inescapable at both transnational and local levels and the role of the humanities in addition to technology and politics is more and more recognized as central for exploring and finding solutions. Representations of nature’s agency have become central to many studies conducted in literature, culture studies, philosophy, history, sociology or political science. This conference aims to explore the relationship between the physical environment and text in its broader meaning as well as analyse the social concerns raised by environmental crises.

Conference panels will be related, but not limited, to:

Poetry is a constant, being produced by all known civilisations from ancient to modern times. Throughout its extensive history, the individual art of high emotions sublimated into perfect language has approached a vast array of subject matters, including love, war, social issues, the beauty of nature, etc. A particular exercise of the mind and soul, and a unique way of apprehending reality, poetry is a self-sufficient universe that intensifies and enlarges life experience. Pointing to inner knowledge rather than real circumstance, it activates different layers of perception, sweeps away human thoughts, feeds emotions and soothes suffering.

Audiovisual content has expanded into new ways of production, distribution, and screening enabled by the evolution of technology and the advent of new media. Apart from giving new life to older audiovisual works by making them accessible to the wide public through an alternative way of consumption, streaming platforms are producing original content that is meant to be consumed exclusively via online means.

Reanimations is an interdisciplinary conference that will be hosted by OCAD University and the Canadian Association for American Studies (CAAS). It will take place online from October 28-30, 2022.

Call for Papers: Beyond Borders : Youth, Politics and New Solidarities in Post-Covid South Asia

This traditional session welcomes submission on any aspect of African American Literature that attends to how black writers use literature to bring out discussion on climate injustice. With the conference theme of "change," readers of African American Literature often miss the criticism of climatic injustice that is present in much literary work, especially of 20th Century Black writers. From Zora Hurston, to Richard Wright, to Jean Toomer, etc., there are many instances of a critique of climatic injustices that are often either misread or simply glossed over. This panel aims to reconsider black writers as the leading figures in both ecocriticism and ecofeminism.

Culture and Theory in Reactionary Times

Since the emergence of Asian American Studies as an intellectual field of studies almost 60 years ago, the field of Asian / Asian American Studies has not only evolved as a whole but has also had to endure ongoing changes and readaptations. Now, perhaps more than ever, the field of Asian / Asian American Studies calls for new changes or perhaps even a new vision, to help us cope with the many living realities and meanings—whether racially, culturally, historically, or politically, just to name a few—on which we stand.

Call for Papers:  Hawthorne and the Environment, Hawthorne and Nature

 Hawthorne and the Environment, Hawthorne and Nature (Special issue, NHR, spring, 2023)

Gardeners of the Galaxies: How Imaginary Worlds Teach Us to Care for This One will be an academic, peer-reviewed collection of interdisciplinary essays, co-edited by Dr. Brenton Dickieson and Dr. Sørina Higgins. This volume will explore literature, film, the visual arts, and other creative works (especially Cli-Fi, genre fiction, and speculative lit) that imagine, invent, and embody environmental concerns.

While the term “Anthropocene” is frequently used to describe the current geological era of human-created and accelerated climate change, multiple other terms have emerged as scholars expand their understanding of the interconnectedness of human endeavors and their consequences. A useful alternative is “Plantationocene,” which emphasizes the economization of life and places the foundations of global climate change within the intertwined plantation systems of the preceding centuries, including how they continue to be reproduced in new, nefarious ways in the present day. This session seeks presentations that take any aspect of the plantation and its enduring legacies as a starting point for interrogating literature.
