The John Dos Passos Society is proud to announce its 2024 biennial conference in Bassano del Grappa, Italy, at the stunning fifteenth-century Villa Cà Erizzo Luca, where Dos Passos was stationed as an American Red Cross ambulance driver in the winter of 1918.

RSAJournal, the journal of the Italian Association of American Studies (https://www.aisna.net/journal/, currently transitioning to OJS), is seeking Special Section proposals for its #35 issue (publication date: September 2024). The Special Section revolves around one "leading edge" topic/concept in the field of American Studies and typically includes 6 journal-length essays by established as well as early career scholars.

Greetings from California State University, San Bernardino. As the editor of the digital edition of the Encyclopedia of Hispanic-American Literature (Facts on File), I'm inviting scholars to contribute essays of approximately 1500-2000 words to this contracted and peer reviewed volume. The volume is scheduled to be published digitally in 2024/2025.  Deadline for proposals is 11/1/23.

Ways to contribute:
1) Research, write and submit for peer review one of the essay topics listed, a biography.
AND/OR
2) Serve as a peer reviewer–reviewers should have expertise/publishing/teaching/editing record in the field of Spanish American and or Latino literature. Each reviewer will read about 50-100 pages.

This interdisciplinary conference aims to explore the dynamic relationships between play and pleasure in various literary and cultural contexts, while critically examining the contemporary debates surrounding these themes. We encourage submissions that emphasise their interconnectedness rather than treating them as separate entities. In this light, we invite scholars to redefine, subvert, or “play” with these terms.

Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence  (2001) was not a blockbuster in the sense of Jaws, E.T or Jurassic Park (the other films covered in this book series) – it did however make a heavy return on its near $100 million budget and received critical praise in the media. The film is the product of several authors: science fiction writer Brian Aldiss on whose short story ‘Supertoys Last All Summer Long’ (1969) the film was based; Stanley Kubrick, whose project it had been initially before passing it over to Spielberg in the wake of Jurassic park, Spielberg made and released the film two years after Kubrick’s death.

Since the late 1990s the British gangster film (whose popularity peaked during the 1970s and again in the early 1980s with films such as Get Carter (1971) and The Long Good Friday (1980)) has undergone a series of re-inventions and re-appraisals. Two films are largely responsible for the cultural renaissance of the genre: Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (Ritchie, 1998) which turned 25 in 2023 and Sexy Beast, which turns 25 in 2025.

Are you a creative writer who consciously plays with techniques that transgress the borders between fiction and nonfiction? What is it that attracts you to this liminal space between the two, and what new writing territory do you want to form there? Your work might be in auto/bio/fiction, the historical or nonfiction novel, speculative history or a hybrid genre. You might balk at these categories as reductive and antipathetic to this genre-defying writing. Haunting Lives is an edited collection that will illuminate this border country, help readers to navigate or succumb to its strange terrain and examine the spectres that live there.
