CFP for the Oxford Medieval Graduate Conference 2024: ‘Signs and Scripts’

The Oxford Medieval Graduate Conference committee is excited to announce that the theme for the 2024 conference is: ‘Signs and Scripts.’

The conference will be held in person on the 8th and 9th of April, 2024. We are delighted to announce this call for papers and invite proposals relating to all aspects of the broad topic ‘signs and scripts’ in the medieval world. Submissions are welcome from all disciplinary perspectives, whether historical, literary, archaeological, linguistic, interdisciplinary, or anything else. There are no limitations on geographical focus or time period, so long as the topic pertains to the medieval period.

Using neural networks, the AI literature tools produce human-like pieces of literature that are, in most cases, marked by twisted imitations of the masterpieces both in language and content. The ‘Artificial’ is repetitive and selected from the vast body of literature available on the web or from the classics, a particular language model is fed with. With this caveat, we venture into experimenting with writing with the Bots.

The Mythic Circle is the creative writing journal of The Mythopoeic Society, an international association of scholars and fans of J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, the Inklings, and fantasy literature with a mythic bent. The journal has been in continuous publication since 1987; it comes out annually in time for the summer conference of the Mythopoeic Society.

New Modalities of Irishness: Performance, Race and Inequality

The Modalities of Irishness project co-hosted by University College Dublin’s Clinton Institute and Boston University’s College of Fine Arts is now accepting submissions for its second event, following the successful first symposium in Boston in June 2023. The next symposium in the series will take place at the Clinton Institute on Friday 19th April 2024.

We are pleased to announce that the inaugural issue of Studies of Biblical Interest (SBI) is now inviting submissions. SBI strives to foster an environment of open and pluralistic inquiry through articles related to comparative biblical studies, textual criticism, etymological research, archaeology, anthropology, religion and science, the study of religious and cultural texts worldwide, alternative readings, discussions, critiques, and reviews. We also reserve space in each issue for items that would not traditionally be published in an academic journal, including art, literary fiction, music, opinion pieces, photography, and poetry.

The Charles Olson Society will sponsor a session at the annual American Literature Association Conference, to be held in Chicago, May 23-26. This year, the Society is interested in abstracts that examine the later periods of Black Mountain Poetry. After the closure of Black Mountain College, the liquidation of the property in 1957, and the folding of the Black Mountain Review in the same year, poets like Olson, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, John Wieners, Ed Dorn, and Larry Eigner had to find new centers of community where they could continue the advances of their experimental poetics. Gloucester, Buffalo, San Francisco, New York, Boston, and New Mexico – different locales became important for fostering exchange for these poets.

The Charles Olson Society and the Amiri Baraka Society will co-sponsor a session at the annual American Literature Association Conference, to be held in Chicago, May 23-26. This year, our two societies are pleased to announce a collaboration around the theme of jazz and its relation to the development of experimental American poetry. As Charles Olson once stated in a series of talks titled “On Black Mountain”: “Boy, there was no poetics. It was Charlie Parker. Literally, it was Charlie Parker.” Olson was thinking back to his 1950s correspondence with Robert Creeley, who consistently wrote to Olson about the importance of Parker’s bop rhythms for his own poetics. In the talk, Olson equates the entirety of the New American Poetry with just Charlie Parker.
