Unpacking the Library: Literatures and their Archives.

The history of Western culture is punctuated by affirmations of the presence,
rebirth, or return of literature. Such affirmation involves, necessarily, if
implicitly or symbolically, a turn toward the archival forms of the text – that
is, traditionally speaking, a turn toward the codex and the library. This
recourse to textual holdings in various senses clearly involves often
unacknowledged complexities of institutional, technical and cultural issues.

For the 8th Modernist Studies Conference in Tulsa (October 19-22,
2006) I am looking for papers for a session on the surprisingly
energetic involvement with clipping services by modernist writers.
What can clipping services tell us about modernism and individual
modernist writers? How did writers use clipping services? What does
the use of clipping services reveal about modernist relations to mass
culture? What kinds of knowledge do these archives reveal? What
potential for research is there?

Please send a maximum 500-word abstract by April 21 to Len Diepeveen

       Beckett Studies has changed radically since Richard Gilman claimed that Beckett's imagination worked "almost entirely outside history". In recent years, much work has been done to recover the relevant social and cultural contexts for Beckett's work, and this process has been greatly expedited by continuing efforts to disseminate the contents of the many drafts and manuscripts housed in the archives.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Modernist Studies Association 8

October 19-22, 2006, Tulsa, OK

"Little Magazines and the Visual Arts"

The arrival of modernism in the visual arts, for British and American audiences alike, is often equated simply with urban spectacles that drew critical viewers en masse - in Britain, the 1910 exhibition of "Monet and the Post-Impressionists," and in America, the 1913 New York Armory Show. This panel seeks to complicate these assumptions by considering the role that visual reproductions and verbal descriptions of art have played in shaping the conception of what we have come to know as modernism.

Chapbooks and Knowledge in 18c Britain

How did references to, and/ or knowledge of, chapbooks figure in 18c
redefinitions of knowledge? How did those participating self-
consciously in "Enlightenment" describe chapbooks and their readers,
and how did such descriptions figure in the production, consumption,
and assessment of different kinds of print products?

We are seeking 500-word proposals for an interdisciplinary collection of essays that examines the relationship between copyright law and the activities of writing, researching, teaching, and learning. Regardless of the particular activity or combination of activities under discussion, we are concerned primarily with the legal, questionably legal, and illegal production and distribution of texts, which we define broadly to include verbal, print, auditory, visual, and new media, as well as computer code.

decisions concerning the presentation of particular texts;
authenticating paratexts for slave and other narratives; book-form
republication of works previously published in serial form only for
black-owned periodicals; issues of archival preservation; questions of
canonization; "packaging" and repackaging of "Negro-authored" texts;
