"The Future ain't what it used to be" is the seventh annual Postgraduate Conference held by the English Programme, University of Dundee. It will investigate questions such as: how have perspectives of the future changed over time, how is the future perceived in literature and the media today, and how do representations of the past help us to imagine the future? Proposals should be 300 words long, for papers lasting 20 minutes. The deadline for proposals is 15th May 2009.

Proposals are invited for essays on the translation, performance and reception of ancient Greek drama in the period between and around the two world wars—so, very broadly speaking 1900-1950.

Essays which have an international focus or dimension are particularly encouraged: for example, discussions of translations and adaptations which engage with international politics; considerations of intercontinental trends in Greek play performance; or essays on the various receptions of internationally touring productions (such as Max Reinhardt's Oedipus, 1910-12, Harley Granville-Barker and Lillah McCarthy's Amercian tour of Trojan Women and Iphigenia in Tauris, 1915).

The IMWC will take place at the Dokuz Eylul University in Turkey between October 13th and 16th, 2009 and the overarching theme for the Congress will be "Change and Empowerment."

The regional meeting of the Conference on Christianity and Literature will explore a wide variety of approaches to the intersections between Christianity, literature, and the city. This three-day conference, held just west of Chicago at Wheaton College (IL) will include keynote addresses by Andrew Delbanco and Anne Winters, traditional panels, at least two undergraduate student panels with faculty moderators, poetry readings, art exhibitions, and associated excursions into Chicago. As the citizen of the nation becomes the consumer of the multinational corporation, our roles as inhabitants of space become increasingly complicated. Our literature, our faith, our bodies all speak to the different ways that we find to occupy the shifting territories of the postmodern landscape. Looking both to the past and future can help us to discover the real and imagined ways our cultures can develop in more richly and defined ways.

2009 marks, in addition to an historic moment in US politics, the anniversary of many watershed moments in the history of Hispanic Literatures. On the Peninsula, this year marks the 400th anniversary of the expulsion of the moriscos from Spain, ending the era of the so-called convivencia of three cultures in Iberia. In Latin America, we celebrate the 400th anniversary of the 1609 publication of the Comentarios Reales by the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, offering a new perspective in the telling of indigenous history in the New World. . In more recent history, we commemorate seventy years since the end of the Spanish Civil War and the ushering in of a dictatorship, which would attempt to silence dissident voices in three ensuing decades.

This panel seeks to explore theoretical approaches to ancient and/or modern texts. Proposals that deal with a single genre, such as poetry or prose or drama, are acceptable. However, scholars are also encouraged to explore texts that cross traditional boundaries and examine relations between, for instance, the Iliad and the Odyssey on the one hand and the Lord of the Rings novels on the other. Similarly, while read-and-lecture presentations are acceptable, scholars are encouraged to use audio-visuals to support their arguments.

Call for Papers (Online Submission Deadline: March 30, 2009)

The "Women in Literature" panel of this year's PAMLA conference invites proposals for papers addressing the session topic from a broad range of scholarly perspectives.

Graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars from the United States and abroad are all welcome to submit a proposal via PAMLA's online submission form at http://www.pamla.org/2009/proposals. Please keep proposals to 500 words or less and include an abstract of your paper (no more than 50 words).

I will be chairing a panel on Ancient-Modern Relations at November's Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association's conference in San Francisco. The conference tends to be wide-ranging, so work on anything related to the topic is welcome. Of particular interest are issues related to: Romanticism, the C19, and Modernism; "Orientalism" and/in the Ancient World; Postcolonial approaches to and definitions of the "Ancient"; and Critical Theory's debt to Ancient Philosophy.

But again, this is a broadly defined panel, and all proposals dealing with Ancient and Modern Relations are welcome.

The conference dates are November 6-7, 2009, in San Francisco.

We are pleased to announce an open call for submissions to the second issue of Shift, set to be launched 01 October 2009. Shift welcomes academic papers, as well as exhibition and book reviews, dealing with visual and material culture from graduate students in any discipline in the humanities. Papers may address a full range of topics and historical periods. Topics may include, but are not limited to, art and propaganda, patronage, gender and identity, spirituality and art, nationalisms and regionalisms, modernism and modernity, performance art, photography and film, perspectives in theory, methodology, and historiography, collection and representation, art and technology.
