Re-Orienting English: Paradigms in /of Crisis; date 2009/12/05; deadline 2009/09/01

updated:
Wednesday, July 22, 2009 - 8:44pm
Dept. of Foreign Languages and Literatures, National Taiwan University

What is English studies in the early decade of the 21st century, when the national boundaries are being crossed and redrawn thanks to the international flight, the Internet and people flows, when the rise of China starts to challenge the dominance of the English, when it has dawned upon us much of academic production is enmeshed with the credit crunch? New intellectual paradigms seem to emerge as literary studies vie with cultural studies, and other subjects for finance, space, work force and, more importantly, students.

This conference aims to highlight emerging research focuses related to the studies of the English language, culture, literature, art, manners and tastes, etc. with special emphasis to their "oriental" context(s).

If conventional, twenty-first-century thinking holds that grammar is a dull set of descriptions and prescriptions consisting only of skeletal schemes of morphology and syntax, it is worth remembering that these structures have crystallized out of a more dynamic mass of language. Grammar is theory—a way of seeing patterns and paradigms that only become visible when one steps back from mundane, everyday exchanges (which for the most part do not extend beyond immediate concerns—and can often be negotiated nonverbally) and seeks to comprehend the rules that permit more complex interactions.

The recent 'creative turn' in translation studies has challenged notions of translation as a derivative and uncreative activity which is inferior to 'original' writing. Commentators have drawn attention to the creative processes involved in the translation of texts, and suggested a rethinking of translation as a form of creative writing. Hence there is growing critical and theoretical interest in translations undertaken by literary authors.

updated:
Wednesday, July 1, 2009 - 7:19pm
Jacket

Submissions are currently being accepted for a feature, "H.D. and the Image," which is tentatively scheduled for publication in Jacket. The feature will focus on the relevance of Imagist technique to contemporary poetry, particularly the ways that poets today continue to draw from the Imagist tradition that Hilda Doolittle represented. Doolittle remains a unique figure in 20th century women's poetry, particularly because she continually revised her own definition of Imagist technique in transitioning from early works like Sea Garden to later book such as Helen in Egypt.
