In the 1980s, Anderson proposed the concept of "imagined community" to explain the emergence of nation-state. Appadurai in the 90s further extended its notion of collective imagination to discuss global culture in the postelectronic world. Through collective reading, criticism and pleasure, a "community of sentiment" is made possible. With the help of mass media and migration, individuals and groups have responded to modernity in their own terms and deployed their imaginations differently in the practice of their everyday lives. The experiments with modernity vary and have gone beyond the regulations of the state.

Held every spring, New Directions is an interdisciplinary conference organized for and by graduate students as a way of drawing together student scholars across wide-ranging and diverse fields. Session I: The Alternative Ellen Glasgow
As a transitional figure in the history of Southern and American literatures, Glasgow's long fiction is predominantly the focus of critical consideration, but what of her achievements in other genres? The goal of this panel will be to (re)consider Glasgow's poetry, non-fiction essays, short fiction, and less-discussed long fiction. Essays that also address Glasgow's major and minor works from innovative, alternative, or even "off the wall" perspectives are welcome as well.
