One of the defining themes of the CW’s Supernatural is its interest in fiction and storytelling. The longest running genre series on American television, it has, throughout its twelve seasons, broken the fourth wall in a way that no other TV show likely has. From making Supernatural itself (and its fandom) exist within the world of the narrative to the unique relationship between canon and fanon, fans and creators, Supernatural is a groundbreaking look at the way narratives are created, told, and retold. Yet most scholarship dedicated to Supernatural has omitted thoroughly exploring this crucial aspect of the series.

The following CFP may be of interest to scholars working on questions of sustainable filmmaking and race/gender equality in film.

Centre for Media and Celebrity Studies (CMCS) 4th international conference “Bridging Gaps: Where is the film scholar in Hollywood filmmaking?” is hosting an exclusive media workshop and features the following key speakers at the University of Southern California on March 17-19, 2017:
 

When Henry Jenkins calls the mid-2000s media landscape one of convergence culture, he describes the intersection of media industries, online social media, and television audiences. Using emerging multiplatform strategies producers can directly engage and immerse potential television audiences. Likewise, industry shaped hailing of fans creates fan-like audiences, but it does so within limits, reflecting industry concerns and agenda.

Academic literary critics have long eyed book reviewers, their public counterparts, with suspicion. For example, in The Armed Vision, a 1948 study of the methods of modern literary criticism, Stanley Edgar Hyman makes the following heavily weighted distinction, "the reviewer, more or less, is interested in books as commodities; the critic in books as literature." However, the past 15 years have seen a proliferation of forms and forums for online writing about books that combine the literary and the commodity in complex and interesting ways, deconstructing and reevaluating the distinctions between these terms.

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Area chairs of the Southwest Popular / American Culture Association (http://southwestpca.org) invite paper or panel proposals on any topic related to the works of Joss Whedon.

Join us for the 38th Annual Southwest Popular / American Culture Association Conference, February 15-18, 2017 at the Hyatt Regency in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Proposal submission deadline: November 1, 2016.

Any and all topics will be considered.  Insights into Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly are always welcome, but Whedon’s body of work continues to expand, and we encourage proposals on:

Avid comic book fans sat appalled in theatres as Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel reached the climax of the film in which Superman kills his enemy Zod. Snyder’s film raises the question of whether this killing and the death of Zod could actually fit with Superman’s traditional moral compass. From Man of Steel to the CW’s Arrow and Flash series to the Avengers franchise, comic book characters are facing new ethical developments in their rejuvenation that both encompass and go beyond the idea of killing one’s enemy.
