Southern Exposure: Analyzing the U.S. South through Film

CFP: Critics often cite D. W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation as the
origin of the Hollywood feature film and credit it with helping to
form the Hollywood narrative style. However, the film also marks the
importance of the U.S. southern setting in shaping the American
cinematic imagination. Griffith's film raises the broad issues of
war, tragedy, and romance, but also depicts the more disturbing
issues that continue to be associated with the filmic south: racial
and sexual violence, slavery, vigilante justice, and lynching.

Divorce in Film

We are editing a book entitled After Intimacy: The Culture of Divorce in the
West since 1789, contracted for publication in 2006 and consisting of a
collection of commissioned essays from scholars in the US and the UK,
ranging across European and American literature and culture.

Special Issue of Communication Theory
"Succeeding Failure: openings in communication and media studies"

Succeeding Failure: openings in communication and media studies is the
title of a special journal issue planned for Communication Theory. This
issue will be guest edited by Briankle G. Chang and Garnet C. Butchart of
the Department of Communication at the University of Massachusetts,
Amherst.

CFP: European Silent Cinema (01/15/2006; proposed edited collection)

Submissions are invited for a collection of essays relating to
European Silent Cinema.

The scope of this collection is intended to provide an overview of European
film in the silent era, providing an introduction for students and scholars
and opening up areas for future research. Topics of investigation might
include, but are not limited to: pioneers of national cinemas, questions of
gender and representation, stars, ethnicity, class, audience reception,
entertainment history, visions of modernity and tradition in silent cinema,
exhibition practices (including music), genre, the presence of foreign
producers etc.

Wuxia Fictions: Chinese Martial Arts

in Film, Literature and Beyond

Submissions for this edition are invited by 1 May 2006. With the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero and House of Flying Daggers, the wuxia (Martial Chivalry/Martial Arts genre) has attracted a new wave of critical attention. This issue seeks to examine wuxia fictions in a range of contexts (national, regional, transnational) and across a range of media. Topics might include:

· developments in and aesthetics of fight choreography

· wuxia and authorship in literature and film

We are now accepting submissions for our forthcoming Film/TV/Digital
Media
e-journal, Mediascape. This journal is peer-edited and will be a place
for
articles pertaining to moving images and visual culture. It is published
on a
quarterly table. The topic is open.
