New Cinemas is a refereed academic journal devoted to the
study of contemporary film around the world. Recent
developments have brought about a renewal of film industries in the
Far and Middle East, Europe, Africa and America. However, there
is a marked tendency to focus exclusively upon issues of ‘otherness’

For Edited Volume

I'm particularly looking for essays that explore the complex =
relationship between Benigni's films , the major forces that shaped his =
"art," (such asd History, Dante, Commedia Dell'Arte and Hollywood iconic =
comedians) and his appropriation (and occasional misappropriation) of =
these forces.

Completed essays should be about 7,000 wds. They can be in English, =
Italian or French.

Call for Papers: Journal issue

Superhuman, Supernatural, Superlative, or Simply Super Entertainment? :
Contemporary forms and conditions of entertainment media

Materiality aside, the entertainment media possess a refractory
nature: they are often obstinate, stubborn, wayward, perverse, and
disobedient, refusing to be pinned down by critical responses that
seek to homogenize their nature. For this special issue of the
Refractory Journal, we are interested in critical and theoretical
discussions of the forms / conditions / relationships of contemporary
entertainment media products / industries that may include films,
comic books, computer games or theme parks.

re: 'Studies in European Cinema'

We are pleased to announce the launch of the new refereed
international journal 'Studies in European Cinema' (Intellect) in 2004.

This journal is dedicated to the best work currently being produced on
European Film, European film culture, the changing nature and film output
of Europe itself. It is distinctive in bringing together discussions on a
range of European cinemas, and by the timing and positioning of the
discussions within both a cultural and an historical context.

Areas of interest include:

* All aspects of European film and European film culture;

CALL FOR PAPERS

Scope, a fully refereed online journal of film studies, edited by staff and
postgraduate students within the Institute of Film Studies at the University
of Nottingham, is looking for film reviews of 1,000 to 1,500 words and
review essays of 2,500 to 3,000 words to be included in forthcoming issues.
We are interested in both recently released movies and retrospective reviews
of older films (especially if these films have just been released on video
or DVD, or have been the focus of renewed critical attention).

Revised call: Oprah Anthology

We are soliciting papers for an academic anthology on the phenomenon of
Oprah. It is undeniable that Oprah Winfrey has transcended the iconic
cult of celebrity to become a Western cultural force of the late-twentieth
and early twenty-first centuries. As her show nears its much anticipated
end — though its endless reproduction in syndication seems inevitable — it
seems appropriate to produce an anthology that evaluates the multifaceted
influences and implications of Oprah.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

Proposals and submissions are sought for essays that discuss race,
gender, economics, spirituality, feminism, racial uplift etc... entitled
Oprah: I'm Every Woman! This anthology will cover multiple aspects of
this phenomenon.

An Anthology Concerning Film and Television Depictions of
Children on the American Frontier

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

College Literature is seeking scholarly articles for publication in an
upcoming special issue of this journal devoted to “Celluloid Classics.” We
invite you to submit a paper for consideration.

Having received preliminary interest from an established publisher,
this is a call for chapter ideas for a collection of academic essays on
Star Trek in non-American (i.e. non-United States) and non-Anglophone
cultural contexts.

Deadline for proposals is Tuesday June 2, 2003, as a preliminary book
proposal must be delivered shortly after that.

This volume will be a broadly interdisciplinary volume on the presence
and perceptions of the Star Trek series, movies, and books (possibly
even other ST products) in the areas of (not inclusive) anthropology,
sociology, communications, lingustics, translation studies, history,
philosophy, cultural studies, and related disciplines.

QUEER AS FOLK. Contributions are sought for a collection of essays
(tentatively) titled: "Queer as Text: Critically Cruising Gender,
Performance and Sexuality in 'Queer as Folk'." Press in negotiation.
Essays may focus on both the British and American versions of the show,
and analyses that critically compare both versions are especially
welcome. Topics may include:

- intersections of gender performance, sexuality and class within the
show

- deconstructions (and interpellations) of 'queer' (that is, how the show
aligns or disaligns itself with current traditions of queer theory)

- themes of alterity, alienation and exile vs power, pride and inclusion
within the show
