In the last year, the world has experienced "natural" disasters of horrific proportions
-- the Asian tsunami, hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean regions,
mudslides in Central America, and an earthquake in Pakistan. The enormity of
these disasters and the devastation that has resulted from connected human failings

that will explore representations of the New Woman in American culture
in the period from 1890 to 1915.
To what extent, how, and to what end did venues such as early silent
films or the stage represent the New Woman and to what extent did such
representations "echo" the familiar periodical and newspaper
illustrations of the figure? Other questions that might be addressed:
How are such representations like or unlike those in the literature of
the period? Is there a transatlantic dimension to such images?

The Food Memoir: Tales of Family and Culture
An Increasingly popular subgenre of autobiography, a form of
autobiography that Paul John Eakin calls the "relational life story,"
the food memoir (by M.F.K. Fisher, Leslie Li, and Ruth Reichl, for
example) intertwines narratives of family life, travel, and
cross-cultural experiences with recipes and the author's representation
of an evolving self. Essays about published memoirs of 7 to 8 pages or
250-word abstracts are welcome.

Crossing Borders: Women and Communities of Letters, 1500-1700
We welcome submissions for a volume of essays that addresses issues
discussed in the two-part panel sessions called Crossing Borders: Learned
Women and Communities of Letters presented at the Sixteenth-Century Studies
Conference in 2005.
The goals of this volume are to examine ways in which women participated in
communities of letters, to explore how cultural, national, political, and/or
religious "borders" were crossed in such communities, and to consider ways
in which gender influenced the kinds of participation that occurred in such
communities.

James Kincaid is Aerol Arnold Professor of English, University of Southern California. His recent works include Annoying the Victorians (1995), Erotic Innocence: The Culture of Child Molesting (1998), and A history of the African-American people (proposed) by Strom Thurmond : a novel (as told to Percival Everett & James Kincaid) (2004).
Papers are sought from scholars working in literature, gender studies
and/or film to present 15-minute papers on representations of gender and
the natural world.
The 60th Annual Convention of the Rocky Mountain Modern Language
Association will be held in Tucson, Arizona on October 12-14, 2006.
