Panel Title: Hemingway as Father
MLA Conference in Chicago, December 27-30, 2007

Much of the existing scholarship on Hemingway and fathers focuses on his relationship or those of his young male characters to his/their father. For this panel, we invite papers that address Hemingway as father. Papers might explore topics such as Hemingway's attitudes toward fatherhood, his parenting philosophy, his relationship to his sons (real and fictional), etc. and/or Hemingway's status as a literary patriarch including but not limited to the commodification of fatherhood through Hemingway's image as "Papa."

This is a call for papers that address the topic of gay masculinity. Can there be such a thing, or rather, are there many types of masculinities or is there only one masculinity? Must a gay masculinity (which is usually labeled as inadequate or excessive) always be defined against the heteronormative definition of what is masculine ? Academic pieces that consider these topics, and others of the same theme, are welcome.

  CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:
    Contributors are currently sought for a collection of scholarly essays devoted to the films of Guy Maddin, one of the most distinctive, outlandish, and personal filmmakers. Though Maddin's international reputation has grown steadily over the past two decades, in-depth academic analyses of his work have been relatively few in number. This collection will attempt to redress that deficiency by bringing new material alongside several previously published essays, offering multiple perspectives on all things Maddin.
    Possible topics include:
  * postmodernism and its relatives (pastiche, irony, ambivalence, etc.)
  * themes of amnesia/incest/necrophilia

CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue: Rhizomes 14: "Feminism's Others"

As with Rhizomes 7, Theory's Others, this special issue will provide a
space for theorists whose work falls outside the usual academic
boundaries, but here the focus will be on feminist thought. In that
feminism fundamentally aims to correct misconceptions about women in
order to bring about social and cultural gender equality, feminists must
represent -- and circulate representations -- of women as a group, which
would be impossible without making some general statements about women.
