The Cultures of Rebuilding in Post-Katrina New Orleans
An interdisciplinary conference at the University of New Orleans and the
Louisiana State Museum, 6-8 November 2008
The Young Adult Novel. For a special issue on The Young Adult Novel,
Studies in the Novel seeks articles on young adult literature from any
critical/literary perspective. The volume is to be guest edited by Elise
Wormuth (formerly Earthman) of San Francisco State University. "Young adult
literature," in this context, refers to literature that has been written
specifically for and marketed to young adults. New perspectives on
well-known YA novels are welcome, as well as papers on those novels that
have received less critical attention. Completed articles and 1-page vita
to Elise Wormuth at (earthman_at_sfsu.edu ) WITH cc to
(studiesinthenovel_at_unt.edu ) by October 15, 2008.
The Journal of Literacy and Technology calls for submissions as the
journal publishes two or three times a year, using rolling deadlines
throughout the calendar year rather than set dates. The editors believe
that publishing articles as they come in better reflects The Journal of
Literacy and Technology's mission as an online-only peer-reviewed
academic journal.
Submit article manuscripts for consideration at any time. The Journal of
Literacy and Technology currently publishes research articles and book
reviews two or three times a year.

The Epistolary Novel in World Literature
NEMLA Conference in Boston 2/26 - 3/1 2009
This session will explore the "correspondences" in the development of
epistolary novels in different linguistic and cultural traditions.
Epistolary fiction has been redefining the complex relationships between
fiction and verisimilitude from Roman times to today's e-pistolaries or
novels written as a series of email messages. Comparative papers are
especially welcome. Please

Papers in English can be on a single literary tradition, such as English
and/or American or comparative in nature.
The Florida Collegiate Pride Conference is a GLBT conference held once a
year for the GLBT organizations and colleges and universities across
Florida. This year the conference will also welcome organizations from
Georgia and Alabama institutions.
The conference will be held at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in
Daytona Beach, Florida on February 20-22 of 2009. Workshops will be taught
throughout the day on the 21st.

Humanities and Sustainability: Ecology in the Information Age
Florida Gulf Coast University's Center for Environmental and
Sustainability Education, and Departments of Language & Literature and

Fairy Tales
The newly constituted Fairy Tales Area of the Popular Culture Association
invites submissions on any topic involving Fairy Tales for the 2009
Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association Convention, to
be held April 8-11 2009 at the New Orleans Marriott in New Orleans,
Louisiana .
The Fairy Tales Area covers original fairy tales, (i.e. Straparola,
Perrault and Grimm, etc.), contemporary/re-envisioned Fairy Tales
(Datlow & Windling anthologies, The Fairy Tale series, novels, etc.), and
Jack Tales as well as films based on Fairy Tales.
The Graduate English Organization of Truman State University is proud to

Our speaker this year will be author extraordinaire Mary Ruefle, who has

This panel proposes to look at how several American texts in the 20th
century questioned “what is male/masculine?†in a century when feminism
drastically altered the answer to “what is female/feminine?†The
panelists will examine how their books/films undertook that task by
asking one central question: How does the creator construct what it means
to be masculine in an age when that is no longer a foregone
determination? What tools, roles, tasks and/or world views are depicted
in/by the male characters, either in strait-forward depiction or by
implication, that inform the reader of the author’s understanding of
being male in the modern world? Do these depictions continue unimpeded
Please consider being part of a roundtable discussion I am hoping to
organize at the College English Association’s annual meeting in
Pittsburgh on March 26-28, 2009. The subject of the discussion will be
the challenges and rewards of teaching English at military colleges and
academies. It can be difficult to assert the importance of studying
literature and writing to any college student given that students have
become more focused on obtaining an education that will guarantee them a
job and financial stability. Certainly, teaching students whose primary
goal is to commission in the military can add additional challenges to
that task. Join our discussion in order to share information about your
