Digital Humanities Summer Institute 2017 | DHSI Colloquium

Proposals are now being accepted for presentations at the Digital Humanities Summer Institute Colloquium, to be held in June 2017 at the University of Victoria. Open to all, the DHSI Colloquium offers an opportunity to present research and projects within an engaging, collegial atmosphere. Submissions are peer-reviewed, with participants subsequently invited to contribute to a DHSI-themed special issue in an open-access journal.

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (ALRA) is a peer-reviewed open access academic journal launched in 2016 by the Center for the Study of Academic Labor (CSAL) at Colorado State University. The journal encourages ongoing research on matters relating to tenure and contingency in the academy, both nationally and internationally. Along with our center and web site, we offer a research home for those undertaking scholarship in areas broadly defined as tenure studies and contingency studies. To meet this objective, we invite a wide range of contributions, from the statistical to the historic/archival, from the theoretical to the applied, from the researched to the creative, and from empirical to essayist forms.

UConn’s Twelfth Annual Conference on the Teaching of Writing will consider the roles of—and tensions between—humility and conviction in writing and writing instruction. We invite proposals that engage questions such as (but not limited to) the following:

The Journal of South Texas English Studies is now welcoming submissions for its Fall 2016 issue, themed “Journeys: Literal, Metaphorical or Imaginary.” EXTENDED Submission deadline: November 11, 2016. ‘Journey’ is a word that evokes images and feelings of freedom, escape, newness, experience, and curiosity. Within English studies, a journey may be literal, requiring movement across borders and spaces; figurative journeys often develop the inner dynamic of a character; and whimsical voyages, on the other hand, take place in the mind—the ultimate creative, uncharted territory.

"A good educational system should have three purposes: it should provide all who want to learn with access to available resources at any time in their lives; empower all who want to share what they know to find those who want to learn it from them; and, finally, furnish all who want to present an issue to the public with the opportunity to make their challenge known" (75-76).

The Lehigh English Department's third annual Literature and Social Justice Graduate Conference will take place at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, on March 10-11, 2017. This year’s conference theme is Borders and Violence. We invite diverse literary and pedagogical approaches to this theme, including papers that respond to the following questions: How do borders, whether physical, linguistic, economic, etc., signal or enact forms of violence? Conversely, how do borders function as sites of resistance? What forms can resistance to borders and/or violence take?  How does violence at sites of cultural difference affect communities and individuals? This violence might be physical, emotional, metaphorical, linguistic, cultural, judicial, etc.

Most often, borders are thought of as spaces of division that, according to Gloria Anzaldúa, “distinguish us from them.” However, borders also create their own spaces, as “two worlds merging to form a third country — a border culture [where] duality is transcended.” The presence of multiple languages and dialects in border contexts and the language experiences of linguistically diverse writers provides teachers and students with opportunities and challenges as they engage writing in personal, social, educational, professional, and community situations where audience, purpose, and language vary.
