South Atlantic Modern Language Association; November 15-17, 2019; Atlanta, Georgia; Special Session - Roundtable - Critical University Studies. This roundtable welcomes submissions on any aspect of Critical University Studies. Topics that examine the relationship between higher education and society could include specific institutional histories, critical pedagogy, the public/private divide, student debt, academic labor, and legitimation crises in the humanities. Students are often silent in classes. How do teachers interpret silence from students? How do students interpret silence from the teachers? Why do students’ choose to be silent in the classroom? Are teachers aware that students are choosing to be silent? Through the lens of languaging, silence is a linguistic/language device that is less addressed in the research. Like languaging, the use of silence in classrooms can be perceived as “creative and critical use of linguistic resources to mediate cognitively complex activities (Garcia & Wei, 2014, p. 10). Because second language (L2) writers have multiple languages in their linguistic repertoires, silence is one of the strategies that has been misinterpreted by many instructors.

We seek intelligent critical articles written in a clear, readable style that offer our readers thoughtful, useful, pedagogically sound, and innovative ideas for teaching American literature. We are also interested in articles about new American authors or lesser known authors who haven't seen much study, particularly in ways that they could add to students' experiences of American literature. All articles go through a blind peer review process with editorial staff making all final publishing decisions. Submission Deadline: May 31, 2019.

This year's MMLA conference theme of "Duality, Doubles, and Doppelgangers" offers a wealth of possibilities to explore the complex relationships that minority and immigrant communities have within the larger culture of the United States, as well as the ways in which literary texts communicate the realities of their experiences to a wider audience, particularly when they are introduced in the classroom.  With this in mind, the Multicultural Literature in the Classroom section seeks papers that explore the often conflicted relationships that minorities and immigrants have with the communities around them, as well as the ways in which minority and immigrant populations enrich and strengthen the communities of which they are apart, even as they strive to main

SAMLA’s conference theme Languages: Power, Identity, Relationships calls for us to explore the power and impact of language. This panel looks to examine language, specifically considering pedagogical approaches to teaching various aspects of language and the power of language in literature classes, from introductory survey classes to comprehensive seminars.

The MLA RCWS Literacy Studies Forum invites proposals for MLA 2020 presentations on literacies and literacy practices, situated in a wide range of political, social, economic, linguistic, educational, cultural, and technological contexts. Specifically, at MLA 2020 we are interested in exploring how literacies are exchanged between people and contexts. How do people, their literacy practices, and texts change as a result of this transaction? We welcome papers that speak to literacy, exchange, and change. SAMLA's 91st Annual Convention will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, November 8-10. The conference theme is "Languages: Power, Identity, Relationships." I am soliciting papers for a panel on Zora Neale Hurston's most recent publication, Barracoon.

Originally named Kossola, Cudjo Lewis was illegally brought to America on the last slave ship, the Clotilda. Hurston completed the manuscript about his life story in 1931, but it was not published until 2018 as Barracoon, The Story of the Last Black Cargo. Critics praised this text as evidence of Hurston’s anthropological skills, yet it also serves as a rejoinder to the skewed white-washed history of slavery in the popular imagination.

Proposals are invited for a session at the 2020 MLA convention (Seattle, 9-12 January). Papers in this session will present and discuss specific (older or newer) ways of teaching literary linguistics in any educational context and investigate how students use and respond to the methods applied.

In her 1977 essay “Toward a Black Feminist Criticism,” Barbara Smith says, “The use of Black women’s language and cultural experience in books by Black women about Black women results in a miraculously rich coalescing of form and content and also takes their writing far beyond the confines of white/male literary structures.” Smith uses “black women’s language” to make the case that a black feminist framework would have much in common with a rapidly expanding black women’s literary tradition. An unending source for “cultural manifestations” of black womanhood, literature from black women has a critical value outside of white/male literary structures.
