Silence in L2 writing classrooms: Global Perspectives

Students are often silent in classes. How do teachers interpret silence from students? How do students interpret silence from the teachers? Why do students’ choose to be silent in the classroom? Are teachers aware that students are choosing to be silent? Through the lens of languaging, silence is a linguistic/language device that is less addressed in the research. Like languaging, the use of silence in classrooms can be perceived as “creative and critical use of linguistic resources to mediate cognitively complex activities (Garcia & Wei, 2014, p. 10). Because second language (L2) writers have multiple languages in their linguistic repertoires, silence is one of the strategies that has been misinterpreted by many instructors.

SAMLA's 91st Annual Convention will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, November 8-10. The conference theme is "Languages: Power, Identity, Relationships." I am soliciting papers for a panel on Zora Neale Hurston's most recent publication, Barracoon.

Originally named Kossola, Cudjo Lewis was illegally brought to America on the last slave ship, the Clotilda. Hurston completed the manuscript about his life story in 1931, but it was not published until 2018 as Barracoon, The Story of the Last Black Cargo. Critics praised this text as evidence of Hurston’s anthropological skills, yet it also serves as a rejoinder to the skewed white-washed history of slavery in the popular imagination.

In her 1977 essay “Toward a Black Feminist Criticism,” Barbara Smith says, “The use of Black women’s language and cultural experience in books by Black women about Black women results in a miraculously rich coalescing of form and content and also takes their writing far beyond the confines of white/male literary structures.” Smith uses “black women’s language” to make the case that a black feminist framework would have much in common with a rapidly expanding black women’s literary tradition. An unending source for “cultural manifestations” of black womanhood, literature from black women has a critical value outside of white/male literary structures.
