CFP: "Elizabeth Barrett Browning: History, Culture and
Politics" (Submission date: June 16, 2006)

Victorian Review is publishing a special issue on interdisciplinary
approaches to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, to be published in the summer of
2007. The editor is seeking 5000-8000 word essays that introduce new
methodologies and approaches to the study of EBB's poetry, correspondence or
other writing. Topics might include political thought,
historiography, theology, science, psychology, legal theory, visual
culture, history of
sexuality, journalism, abolitionism, feminist activism, nationalism, etc.

Poets, professors, and lovers of poetry in general repeatedly assert that the
book as an aesthetic object has lasting value. But are we kidding ourselves?
 With a readership increasingly reliant on the computer, and a new generation
of students who have never known a time when the Internet was more than a
click away, is it only a matter of time before poetry is primarily an element of
cyberspace? Is this good or bad? With more than a hundred fonts, point
sizes, untold programs and graphic elements, how will the function of the computer
affect the actual forms of poetry?

The H.D. International Society has some exciting news about a project =
important to the study of H.D. The Co-Chairs of the H.D. Society, =
Annette Debo and Lara Vetter, have received approval from MLA to begin =

2006 is the centenary of the birth of John Betjeman, Poet Laureate from
1972-84. To celebrate this event and to highlight the extensive holdings of
Betjeman's correspondence and manuscripts at the University of Victoria
(Canada), two panels on June 29th are dedicated to Betjeman and his milieu
in the "ON MIRACLE GROUND XIV" conference of the International Lawrence
Durrell Society (25-29 June 2006).

Papers that deal with any aspect of Betjeman's career or his engagement with
his contemporaries are welcome, though those with an archival or comparative
approach are particularly appropriate to the conference's general theme.

2006 ALSC Conference, San Francisco, California, October 13-15 2006

 Papers are invited for the 2006 edition of the journal of new poetry of African expressions NP Vol 1 No. 3 2006. The Journal of New Poetry (internationally refereed) is an online project of the International Research Confederacy on African Literature and Culture [IRCALC] which previously edited the New Nigerian Poetry Journal. The Journal of New Poetry of African expressions [NP] is an expansion of our editorial scope to reflect the global dimension of ircalc's efforts in African literary and cultural appreciation. By African expressions we refer to materials from both the geographical Africa and the island of Madagascar and the heritage that includes other members of the African Diaspora across the Americas, Europe, the Caribbean Islands, etc.

Raphael Rubinstein says "appropriative writing." Michael Davidson says "palimtexts." Gregory Betts says "plunderverse." Purists say "plagiarism." This panel of the AWP will feature poets whose writing incorporates source texts as a compositional process and perhaps also with the intention of challenging the idea of textual ownership. Poets in this panel will discuss methods of appropriation in their own work and suggest theoretical issues underlying their use of source texts. The 2007 AWP will be in Atlanta, February 28 - March 3.

 As Helen Vendler has written, the function of a lyric poem is to offer 'aesthetically convincing representations of feelings felt and thoughts thought.' In ways unavailable to other genres, the Renaissance lyric provides insights into the epistemological shifts and changing patterns of thought in Elizabethan and Jacobean England. This session will explore the way the Renaissance Lyric both reflected and inflected contemporary ways of thinking about issues of politics, nationalism, religion, sovereignty, and subjectivity in Early Modern England.
