Southwest/Texas Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association

The Mystery/Detective Fiction section of the Southwest/Texas Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association invites proposals for the 2010 conference in Albuquerque.  The exact days/times of our panels are yet to be determined, but the conference is always held Wed.-Sat. in mid February.

We invite proposals on any topic involving Detective/Mystery fiction.  However, we especially invite proposals on authors who write in less commonly spoken languages; proposals dealing with female, minority, and GLTB authors; and proposals which analyze literature and/or film from different literary standpoints (feminist, psychoanalytical, Marxist, etc.).  In other words, Detective/Mystery fiction is more than Sherlock Holmes.

Romance Fiction and American Culture: Love as the Practice of Freedom?

Last April, Princeton University hosted an unprecedented two-day conference on popular romance fiction and American culture.  Gathering scholars, authors, editors, and bloggers, this interdisciplinary gathering featured panels on romance and history (both political and literary), romance and religion, romance and sexuality, and romance and race; each explored the ways that popular romance fiction has reflected, and also helped shape, American culture from the late 18th century to the present.

The birthplaces of cultures, they symbolize better than everything else the expressions and contradictions of fictional identities. Ulysses wants to go back to Ithaca, Stephen Dedalus wants to leave Dublin, Mahfouz's "beggar" roams the streets of Cairo in search of wisdom…

ON NOT LOOKING: Essays on Images and Viewers

updated:
Thursday, October 8, 2009 - 9:29am
Frances Guerin, Ruhr University, Bochum

Submissions are invited for an edited book with the working title On Not Looking:
Essays on Images and Viewers. Contemporary experience presents us with a
contradiction:  while we are at a historical moment when images have never been so
readily available and circulated, we increasingly "don't look" at images. The
collection of essays will explore the myriad ways that not looking at images — as
opposed to not seeing — is manifest in our burgeoning image culture today.
Contributions are sought that address practices and representations of "not looking,"
"turning away," and other manifestations of physical and mental distraction from
material images.
