Call for Papers "Stereotypes"

Special issue of Reti, Saperi, Linguaggi. Italian Journal of Cognitive Sciences

Stereotypes are ambiguous mental entities. They are negative insofar as they are thoughts that limit us in our process of categorization of reality. At the same time, they help us to simplify reality itself and the large number of perceptual stimuli we are faced with in every moment of our lives. So, while stereotypes can, on the one hand, be seen as a tool for categorization or as extensions of categories themselves – actually, a special type of category – on the other, they force us to assign a simplistic, superficial and unthinking label to a portion of reality, thus giving rise to biases and prejudices.

It is organized by the Chair of American Studies, Faculty of Languages and Literatures, at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt/Germany, and will be held as a residential conference at the Collegium Willibaldinum in Eichstätt.

THEATER AND MOBILITY

Peer English (ISSN 1746-5621) is a refereed, open-access online journal produced by the Department of English at the University of Leicester and the English Association. Since 2006, its remit has been to provide a forum for exciting, high-quality work and new critical thinking by early career researchers (graduate study, post-doctoral research) through to those already established within the community. This approach also includes the notion of 'work in progress' and we welcome contributions of high academic standards from those currently involved in active research, be they doctoral candidates or Heads of Departments.

Watermark, the annual, peer-reviewed scholarly journal published by graduate students in the English Department at California State University, Long Beach, is now seeking submissions for our tenth volume. Watermark is dedicated to publishing original critical and theoretical papers concerned with the fields of rhetoric and composition and literature of all genres and periods. Watermark also accepts reviews of recent books published in these fields of study. As this journal is intended to provide a forum for emerging voices, only student work will be considered.

The deadline to submit an essay or review for consideration is Monday, February 8, 2016. Early submissions are strongly encouraged and will receive priority in the peer-review process.

Watchung Review is a peer-reviewed journal focused on current trends and cutting edge literary writing and research including work on rhetoric and composition as well as digital humanities. The journal aims to foster opportunities for scholars and practitioners to engage in disciplinary conversations critical to the advancement of the humanities by promoting the critical nexus of literature, writing theory, pedagogy and technology. "The imaginary" invokes spectres, memories, what is sensed, felt, and wanted, the fanciful, visionary, shadow, illusory, what is not visible or legible, a past and a future we can not perceive. This conference features keynote speakers Mya Poe of Northeastern University and Donald Pease of Dartmouth College.

For Lacan, the imaginary is the beginning: "I began with the Imaginary, I then had to chew on the story of the Symbolic ... and I finished by putting out for you this famous Real." For sociologist John B.Thompson, the social imaginary is "the creative and symbolic dimension of the social world, the dimension through which human beings create their ways of living together and their ways of representing their collective life."
