Metaphor: Retrospect and Prospects - May 20th - May 22nd 2016

The so-called "Cognitive Revolution" brought with it, among other features, Cognitive or Conceptual Metaphor (CM) (Reddy, Lakoff and Johnson), refining and expanding theories of comparison and property attribution. In the period 1970-1990 circa, CM gradually came to dominate the metaphor scene, consolidating its position in the twenty years that followed, also bolstered by relevance theory and Gricean pragmatics. Naturally, there were "offshoots" and complementary strands - developments such as blending theory − which enriched the scene. Unsurprisingly, inadequacies were also identified and "alternatives" or "integrations", such as perceptual simulation (Gibbs, Barsalou), framing (Schoen, Reddy) offered.

Guest editor Michael LoMonico, Senior Consultant on National Education at the Folger Shakespeare Library and former instructor at Stony Brook University, seeks articles that shed light on how we prepare those who will be teaching Shakespeare to the next generation of middle and high school students and what innovative ways we use to teach Shakespeare to college students.

The Committee on Social Theory at the University of Kentucky is excited to announce our forthcoming project, the website "Why Social Theory?"

This site is designed to become the premiere source for scholars on the subject of Social Theory. As part of the website, we are designing a compendium of key terms, theorists, and schools of thought.

We invite contributors to produce entries for the website. These should range from 250 to 750 words and include references. Entries may cover a particular term (intersubjectivity, spatiality) theorist (Foucault, Marx, Judith Butler) or school of thought (postcolonialism, neo-Marxism, queer theory).

As part of the ongoing series, Teaching Romanticism, we will consider Shakespeare's influence on Regency-era editors, essayists, novelists, poets, and forgers. It would be particularly useful to hear about which texts educators use and in what context, whether they place certain poems or prose works against those of Shakespeare, or connect these texts via contemporary works or theoretical practices…. or something else entirely!

Salient details:Individual entries can of course vary (as it's an online blog), but a typical entry should be about 200-400 words in length. Entries generally take an hour to write up.
