In conjunction with the theme of a future issue of the Shakespeare
Yearbook, "Shakespeare and the Reformation" (co-edited with Glyn
Parry), the journal will sponsor a special session at the upcoming
Annual Meeting of the MLA (Washington, D.C., December 27-30, 2004).

For both the MLA Session and the concomitant issue of the Shakespeare
Yearbook we welcome proposals for papers that explore the ways in
which Shakespeare's plays and poems engage with the spiritual and
temporal consequences of religious change in Elizabethan and Jacobean
England.

THE NATALIE ZEMON DAVIS PRIZE

For the best essay published annually in "Renaissance and
Reformation/Renaissance et Réforme".

The value of the prize is $500 CAD.

This prize honours the contributions of Professor Natalie Zemon Davis to
early modern studies and, in particular, to "Renaissance and
Reformation/Renaissance et Réforme" (with which she was involved at its very
beginning and which is now in its fortieth year).

The winner will be selected by a subcommittee of the editorial board from
among the essays published in each volume. The prize may, in extraordinary
circumstances, be divided among entries judged to be of equal merit.

and a reconstituted editorial board which includes notable scholars from the
UK and France, the US and Canada (see below).

Now in its fortieth year, "Renaissance and Reformation / Renaissance et
Réforme" is a peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary, bilingual quarterly. The
journal publishes articles and reviews on all aspects of the Renaissance,
Reformation, and Early Modern world: literature, geography, history,
religion, art, music, society, and economics.

publisher for a proposed inter-disciplinary collection of essays about the
Renaissance Horse. Although a number of leading critics in the growing

The editors of Borrowers and Lenders: The Journal of Shakespeare and
Appropriation welcome original scholarship engaging with the
afterlives of Shakespearean texts and their literary, filmic,
multimedia, and critical histories.
Borrowers and Lenders is a new, peer-reviewed, online, multimedia
Shakespeare journal to be launched at the Shakespeare Association of
America Meeting in Bermuda in March 2005. The journal will appear
biannually, with a special issue in the Spring and general issue in
the Fall.

While J.R.R. Tolkien professed to dislike the works of William
Shakespeare, he was intimately familiar with many of the plays and was
arguably influenced in many ways by Shakespeare's writings. I am looking
for scholarly but accessible papers of 6,000 to 9,000 words on the topic
of Shakespeare's influence on Tolkien. This collection already includes
essays on themes from Macbeth in The Lord of the Rings, war and glory in
Henry V and The Lord of the Rings, the mythical function of forests and
trees, and catharsis in Tolkien and Shakespeare. Additional topics I
would like to include are the conception of elves for both authors,
Gollum and Caliban, the role of women, and women warriors. Other topics

seeking articles for its Hands On Shakespeare slot. Essays should be written
from the perspective of someone materially involved in some aspect of the
stage or film production of Renaissance drama, and while they should be
intellectually rigorous, and both critically and theoretically informed, the

This is a call for brief proposals or abstracts (200 to 300 words maximum)
for a collection of new essays on Twelfth Night, now under contract with
Routledge.

All approaches are welcome (New Critical to New Historicist, feminist to
materialist, queer theory to psychoanalytic, performance to reception
history, etc.), as are proposals from scholars in Germany, China, Japan,
and elsewhere who might wish to write about the reception of the play in
these or other non-English speaking countries. Ideas for including black
and white illustrations are also desirable.

The deadline for proposals is August 15, 2004. If your proposal is
accepted, the deadline for the completed essay will be June 2006.

I am looking for proposals and abstracts (not full papers at this stage) for
consideration for an edited volume on Shakespeare's All's Well that Ends
Well. A session at the 2006 SAA meeting in Philadelphia will also be
proposed. Proposals and Abstracts can be fairly informal but preferable
should be about 500 words and should be sent by June 30, 2004. Deadline for
accepted proposals will be Summer 2005.
