The economic realities facing today’s undergraduate population have led to a proliferation of enrollments into PhD programs. The unfortunate reality is that the majority of these neophyte graduate students are waiting for jobs that are either no longer available or never existed in the first place. Concurrently, for right or wrong, in US colleges and universities at all levels, adjunct and contingent faculty members are no longer in the minority. These part-time and non-tenure track (NTT) instructors outnumber their tenured and tenure-track counterparts at many two-year and four-year institutions.

Close to 100 years ago, T. F. Tout was able to claim in his magisterial six-volume study of England’s letter-writing offices that the administrative history of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century England was "largely unwritten.” Within the last ten or twenty years, however, historians have undertaken socio-cultural studies of medieval bureaucracy and its personnel, moving from prosopographical and biographical sketches to nuanced examinations of the experience and challenges of bureaucratic employment throughout Europe.

It is hard to exaggerate the novelty of English Treasurer Richard fitz Nigel’s Dialogue of the Exchequer, completed c. 1179. Often considered Europe’s first administrative manual, it required the invention of a new genre, the systematic thinking-through of collected bureaucratic knowledge and its categorization and organization. Successive generations of historians have mined this text for data about England’s taxation office and common law, but it has more to offer researchers of bureaucratic and institutional culture, medieval identity formation, and intertextuality.

Instructing English language learners (ELLs) in composition is a topic that has been widely debated in recent years. Finding ways for teaching ELL students is almost marginalized, though the number of ELL students is growing too fast in the USA institutions. Some scholars and texts suggest emphasis on certain concepts, such as grammar, to better teach writing to ELLs. All studies proved that grammar is not the only factor that can improve the ELL’s writing because there is still disempowerment in ELL writing. This disempowerment comes from treating language as the only barrier to ELL students, when in fact genre serves as an equally challenging barrier, if not more so.

This special issue explores the practice of curation as a multimodal form of creative-critical scholarship. Creative-critical scholarship often employs creative practice as methods and methodologies (Anderson, 2014). It does so in order to not only articulate, but to demonstrate and make material, the relevance of arts practice as scholarly inquiry (Wysocki, 2004). We see  creative-critical scholarship as an artistic scholarly method facilitating action and engagement in critical social issues. We intend, then, for this special issue to call further attention to creative-critical scholarship as a multimodal rhetorical practice.

In our binge-mode culture, TV has become students’ preferred access point to critical thinking. Most college students do not see themselves in canonical texts or feel confident with analysis. Yet, students are typically employing skills of argumentation an analysis in dissecting shows on television, Netflix, and/or Hulu. Even though intellectual discussions, like the ethics around NBC’s The Good Place, occur on podcasts and cultural criticisms online, instructors often cast these opportunities aside as less than tertiary. However, these “alternative” discourse spaces often mirror the level of engagement instructors want to see in the argumentative papers their students write for composition and literature-focused classes.

Differences in educational background, family support systems, English-language proficiency, abilities and disabilities, and more, can strongly impact students' capacities to fulfill course expectations.

But while "differentiation" has become a pervasive buzzword within K-12 pedagogy, in higher education it remains unclear exactly how, where, when, and whose responsibility it is to engage and support students with various learning challenges.

This session seeks to use the concept of the absent present (that which is embodied by students but unacknowledged) within the classroom as a method of disclosure. Such a method is dedicated to both the literal and figurative spaces that foster agency for students and instructors as they embody and articulate multiple critical identities. Particular focus will be placed on the ways student backgrounds and identities are erased or ignored through various means including syllabi, modeled language, instructor feedback, and assignment and assessment structures. Attention to that which is present within our students but goes unacknowledged or undervalued allows for the exploration of ways to better foster more inclusive spaces.

This roundtable will provide a forum for discussants to describe, analyze, and critique their experiences of teaching writing at specialized institutions. “Specialized institutions” will be interpreted broadly as an institution of higher education that is neither a traditional liberal arts college nor a regional, public university, but instead one that offers a narrower focus through its curriculum. For instance, federal service academies (i.e., West Point or Annapolis), technical colleges (i.e., Georgia Tech, MIT, or Cal Poly), or professional schools (i.e., Bentley University or FIT).
