CFP: Shakespeare and Material Culture (9/20/05; Kalamazoo, 5/4/06-5/7/06)

Shakespeare at Kalamazoo invites paper proposals on Shakespeare and
material culture. Possible topics include but are not limited to props
and costumes; material conditions of theatrical production (past and
present); different forms of Shakespearean production (print editions;
television and film adaptation; comics). Papers that are accepted for
the panel on Shakespeare and material culture will be presented at the
41st International Congress on Medieval Studies, Kalamazoo, Michigan,
4-7 May 2006.

Announcement & Call for submissions

The fourth issue of Participations: Journal of Audience and Reception
studies, a new journal which aims to provide an on-line, interdisciplinary
forum for the fields of audience and reception studies, has just come out.

Issue #4 (August, 2005) includes an editorial by Martin Barker, an article
entitled by Thomas Austin concerning audience perspectives on screen
documentaries, an investigation into the reception of French nationalism in
Germany (Joseph Jurt), and Victoria Knight's study into mass communication
consumption in a closed young offenders institution.

Abstracts now being accepted for a Special Session, Italian Sacre
Rappresentazioni, at the 41st International Congress on Medieval Studies at
Kalamazoo, Michigan, May 4-7, 2006. Papers are welcome on any topic related to
the Rappresentazioni, including but not limited to staging, performance, and
relationships to other mystery plays of medieval Europe.

Shakespeare Bulletin seeks essays for a special issue dedicated to
the Shakespearean still image, broadly defined. In accordance with
SB's performance-focused interest in theatre history, contemporary
performance, and film, we seek a range of articles that take
divergent approaches to stillness and the still in relation to
performance: performance-related woodcuts or drawings; stillness and
stasis in theatrical performance or film ("frozen" moments;
tableaux); the photographic still in theatre or film.

In many modern and contemporary narrative acts of psychological and physical violence among women, violence has been interpreted and presented in terms of Freudian envy, spaces for male pleasure, negotiating conflicts in a male world, biological determinism (the over protective mother), or as non-existent, i.e. created by males (women are peacemakers and nurturers, neither inherently violent nor evil) etc.
