In an essay subtitled "Native American Voices and Postcolonial Theory," Louis Owens criticizes postcolonial theorists
who claim to represent a wide panoply of minority voices yet fail to recognize the existence of a resistance literature
arising from "indigenous, colonized inhabitants of the Americas." Owens asks rhetorically what the indigenous Native
American must do "to be allowed a voice like Shakespeare's cursing Caliban" without resorting to mimicking the
language of the "colonial center" that determines legitimate discourse (in Gretchen Bataille, ed., NATIVE AMERICAN

This major international conference at the University of Toronto is being
organized by the SSHRC-funded "Shakespeare and the Queen's Men" project in
association with Poculi Ludique Societas (PLS). The project, a joint venture
led by Alexandra Johnston (REED, University of Toronto) and Helen Ostovich
(McMaster University), aims to recreate the staging conditions of a
sixteenth-century touring company in order to study and test scholarly
theories about acting styles and repertory through performance practice.

 From Euripides’ Bacchae to Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus to Sarah
Kane’s Cleansed bodily dismemberment has proven to be a dramatic trope
which transcends period or cultural distinctions. The 2006 M/MLA drama
panel welcomes submissions which critically address the stakes of
dismemberment in drama. This might take the form of an analysis of a
particular play or a contemporary look at dramatic theories of dismemberment
from Nietzsche’s conception of Dionysian drama to Artaud’s Theatre of
Cruelty. Broader approaches from theories of mimesis to performance studies

Shakespeare Bulletin, a journal for the study of renaissance drama in
performance, published by the Johns Hopkins University Press, is pleased
formally to announce open registration for the RENAISSANCE DRAMA IN
ACTION conference.
 
The conference, to be held November 8-12, 2006 on the University of
Toronto campus, will feature keynote presentations by Ralph Alan Cohen
(Mary Baldwin College and the American Shakespeare Center), Helen
Ostovich (McMaster University), and Paul Yachnin (McGill University).
It will conclude with a fully staged theatrical production of Ben
Jonson's Every Man Out of His Humour.

The last two decades have seen three significant paradigm shifts. First,
there is a movement to deconstruct in order to reconstruct the super
physical world of consciousness in relation to the post human body - data
made flesh. Secondly, the academic disciplines commonly grouped under the
headings of humanities and arts have seen a shift from the textual to the
performative. The arts and humanities have in common that they study
expressions of the experience of being human. It is precisely that
experience that is at the centre of the third paradigm shift, in the

The American Folklore Society sponsors a special session at the annual
meeting of the MLA. In 2006, we invite papers that consider the relationship
between folklore and dramatic literature, including how folklore is employed
by playwrights.
 
Contemporary theatre practice has reached out to incorporate traditional
elements in playwrights¹ search for something new or fresh. Recent examples
include Mary Zimmerman¹s conceptualization of Greek myth in Metamorphoses

"Bridging the Divide: Medieval and Renaissance Performance and
Periodization"
2006 MLA Convention
Philadelphia, December 27-30, 2006

"Periodization" has often limited the ways in which we define, examine, and
theorize performance. This panel invites papers that consider how medieval
and/or renaissance performance challenges
traditional notions of periodization. Periodization is defined broadly in
this context. Papers might suggest how performance bridges such moments as
ancient to early medieval, the High to Late Middle Ages, Medieval to
Renaissance, or pre- to post-Reformation, but papers that examine fresh
definitions, ideas, and theories of periodization are especially encouraged.
