Greek Drama V

This is a call for papers for Greek Drama V, a conference to be held at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada, from Wednesday 5 July to Saturday 8 July 2017. The conference is the fifth of the periodic Pacific Rim Greek Drama conferences, after Sydney 1982, Christchurch 1992, Sydney 2002, and Wellington 2007. The keynote address will be delivered by Prof. Eric Csapo, University of Sydney.

Transmit, transmute, transduce, transfuse: scientific and medical discourses have long relied upon the prefix “trans” to convey the mutability and permeability of living organisms, distant or tiny objects, and inorganic matter. Change is both a celebrated result of scientific advancements and an ominous harbinger of malignancies, disruptions, and decay. As with the clinical laboratory and astronomical observatory, the theatre serves as a reflexive and generative site of transformations, a place to penetrate barriers and test innovative ideas, approaches, and practices. This working session places transdisciplinarity at the core of its mission to identify and explore meaningful convergences of the fields of science and theatre.

Shakespeare’s Ashes

An International Conference, organized by the Shakespeare Society of India

New Delhi, October 21st-22nd, 2016

The Tennessee Williams Annual Review invites academic writing on all aspects of the Williams oeuvre, including his plays, poetry, prose, and correspondence. Studies of the productions of his plays and technical analyses of stagecraft and institutional issues are welcome, as is work on present-day productions of recently discovered and newly edited texts. The journal also routinely publishes brief texts that emerge from the ongoing examination of his literary records. Of particular interest is the history of the reception of Williams’s work and public persona in the postwar Broadway renaissance and in the period roughly from 1940 to 1980, along with scholarship on the lasting effects of Williams’s work on the cinema.

This session invites submissions of paper proposals on plays and/or performances under the broad category of modern drama. Comparative Drama as well as Drama in English papers are welcome.  Papers on SAMLA's conference theme--Utopia/Dystopia: Whose Paradise Is It?--will be given special consideration.

The 9/11 and Popular Culture area is looking for abstract proposals for the MPCA conference in Chicago, IL, at the Hilton Rosemont/Chicago O'Hare from Thursday-Sunday, October 6-9.

The 9/11 Popular Culture area seeks essays that explore the convergence of post-9/11 themes in contemporary television, film, fiction, poetry, comics, and other artistic expression. I am especially interested in essays that approach issues of trauma theory and Islamophobia, as well as critiques of American exceptionalism and politics across artistic expression.

The Urban Studies Area of The Midwest Popular Culture Association/Midwest American Culture Association is now accepting proposals for its upcoming Conference in October 2016.

We seek essays that are interdisciplinary in nature. Papers should not be merely descriptive but involve a philosophical/theoretical exploration of the issues. Any papers that merely describe the events journalistically will be rejected outright. Please see our submission guidelines for further details.

We also seek book reviews within 1200 words and conforming to the MLA style. For works academic and non-fiction works, the books to be reviewed should have been published between 2014 and the present. For works of fiction, the reviews are to be restricted to books published from 2015 to the present.

Concept Note

In his 1967 "Des Espace Autres" Michel Foucault wrote that in contrast to literary and cultural criticism's previous privileging of history, periodization, and time that "The present epoch will perhaps be above all the epoch of space." In the past generation scholars working across a wide variety of the humanities including literary theory, history, philosophy, cultural studies and religious studies have confirmed Foucault's prediction.
