Fear and Loathing: The Springboards of Modern Culture

April 24-26, 2007

Fear and demonization have been some of the most powerful forces enlisted to
create borders between cultures. The call to build a wall between the US &
Mexico, the terms Islamofascism, and surrender monkies, the glorification of
violence in popular media-all are current expressions of fear and
loathing. In America's past we have seen fear and loathing expressed in
regard to Fascism, the Red Scare, the KKK, Japanese internment camps, the
Reservation system, deportations of foreigners, eradications of languages
other than English.

Call For Papers for Proposed Panel on Economics and Narrative Form: Society
for the Study of Narrative Literature, Georgetown, 03/07

Submissions are invited for a proposed panel addressing narrative as an
economic form: in what ways do narrative strategies underwrite economic
relations or financial instruments such as credit, speculation, or interest?
Critics have consistently suggested that the economic content of novels in
particular contributed to the ideological normalization of capitalism, but
have less often engaged the economic consequences of narrative form. How
might narrative form(s) eventuate or contest the consolidation of financial

CALL FOR PAPERS, COLLABORATIONS AND INTERVENTIONS: AESTHETICS AND
RADICAL POLITICS
Fri 2nd Feb 2007, University of Manchester

Sponsored by the SGSA
www.sgsa.org.uk

There has always been a strong connection historically between
aesthetics and radical politics, and this is no less true for the
global justice movement's current preoccupation with cultural
approaches to political action. This conference seeks to bring
radical artists, activists, theorists and academics together to
discuss past and present convergences between the theories and
practices of artists and writers and the theories and practices of
movements for radical social change.

New Deadline for "Cross Cultural Explorations of Trauma" at the North
East MLA, Baltimore March 1-4.

Despite Cathy Caruth's claim in her landmark collection "Trauma:
Explorations in Memory" that "trauma itself may provide the very link
between cultures," trauma has been infrequently explored from
cross-cultural and non-Western perspectives. This panel seeks to examine
the relationship between trauma and culture, to explore and possibly
critique the Eurocentric perspective of trauma studies, and to
investigate the manner in which trauma reinvigorates psychoanalysis with
the work of cultural critique.

Paper topics might consider the following questions:

Immigration is a phenomenon that contemporary societies struggle with. In this context the figure of the foreigner is a good scenario to explore the dynamics and tensions of cultures in contact. The liminal perspective provided by the outsider adds a new interpretation of our own reality, questioning the foundations of the canonical culture and our own identities. "What appear to be cultural units-human beings, words, meanings, ideas, philosophical systems, social organizations-are maintained in their apparent unity only through an active process of exclusion, opposition, and hierarchization.
