deadline for submissions:

Stories are fluid and mutable, forever in a state of flux, and gradually developing according to their shifting surroundings. While certain features of a story endure, other elements undergo changes. Indeed, in their homology between biological and cultural adaptation, Gary Bortolotti and Linda Hutcheon (2007) highlight the importance of persistence and diversity, as persistent and diverse replicators and narratives thrive in biology and culture respectively. Through exploring the persistent elements of a story, we can examine universal themes, timeless symbols and archetypal characters. Meanwhile, the areas of diversity offer insight into the plethora of contextual components framing a story.

This panel seeks to build on the resurgence of interest in the work of Anglo-Mexican surrealist writer and painter Leonora Carrington inaugurated at her death in 2011 at age 94, and continuing through major career retrospectives in Dublin (2013) and Liverpool (2015). For many years, criticism on her writings has been held up by the relative unavailability of her works. Forthcoming centennial reissues of her complete stories (Dorothy Project) as well as her memoir, Down Below (NYRB Classics), however, offer the chance to resituate her work within recent scholarly work on modernism, surrealism, transnationalism, cosmopolitanism, gender studies and sexuality, trauma studies and neurodiversity, translation studies, and more.
