The relationship between literature and science has been a perennial subject of debate. Is there a divide between these two fields, or are they in fact two sides of one thing? The Universities of Kent and Sussex present a one-day conference aimed at interrogating discourses around this subject.

Victorians and the Democratic Imagination

Many Victorians worried that democratizing reforms would upset social stability by empowering a growing middle- and working class, and critics have long argued that these concerns are also manifest in the form and content of the Victorian novel. For many, the Victorian novel has become synonymous with middle-class ideology. D. A. Miller and Mary Poovey have argued that the Victorian novel promulgated a politics of confinement that defined the limits of the individual subject; more recently, Fredric Jameson has highlighted democratic impulses within the form of the novel itself, such as a de-emphasizing of protagonists to also give minor characters interiority.

Messengers from the Stars: On Science Fiction and Fantasy

Central to the Latin word translatio is the notion of 'carrying across' or crossing boundaries. Translation is fundamental to effective human communication, but translation requires more than just moving between two languages. When we translate, we cross many kinds of boundaries – political, linguistic, geographic, and gendered. Thus, whether literary, linguistic, media-based, or artistic, communicative acts require reliable interpreters in order to "carry across" their intended meanings. Yet, this "carrying across" can result in unintended loss and gain, even with the most skillful of interpreters. When a literary work, a piece of art, an idea, or a system moves across boundaries, what is left behind? What resists translation? What is added?

In the preface to Borderlands, Gloria Anzaldúa declares: "I am a border woman." As simple as it sounds, this statement suggests the individual's agency in the social and cultural production of personal identity as it boldly rejects to acknowledge the power of the state in the process. Migration and border-crossing today present serious political, social and cultural challenges, which force countries to craft policies to address security, economic, and humanitarian concerns. The migration crisis in Europe offers a new perspective on the development of migrant identity in this ever-changing relationship between the individual and the host country.

A Conference on Thomas More's Utopia to be held at St. Thomas More College, University Of Saskatchewan, 22-24 September 2016, in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the work's publication.

In the five hundred years since Thomas More published his Utopia, the work has had a profound influence on political and philosophical thought. But it has likewise held an important place in modern aesthetic and cultural developments—in literature, in art, in architecture and design—and has inspired political change, social experiments, and radical countercultural movements.

The Martineau Society will be hosting its 22nd annual conference in Birmingham, England. The Martineau Society conference is an interdisciplinary conference that focuses on the lives, work, and contributions of the Martineau family, including its two most famous and influential members, Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) and James Martineau (1805-1900).

Started by Norwich Unitarians in 1994, the Martineau Society encourages scholarship on the Martineau family and their nineteenth-century context as well as their continuing influence.

We're looking for female writers to submit a story with the theme of "chosen" or "defeating the odds," and no more than 2,500- 5,000 words. All stories should be Young Adult or New Adult, but can be dark and ominous, humorous, or even fantastical; you decide.

Stories should be submitted in standard manuscript format as a Microsoft word document. Send the story as an email attachment (stories sent in the body of the email will not be considered). All stories must be unpublished. Although, this is an unpaid endeavor, this is for a great cause, and a great way to be published, and a great way to get reviews and press. Proceeds will go to Project READ's drop-in center in Liberia, Nedra House.
