The second "Scottish Renaissance" which is often said to have begun with
the publication of Lanark and which reached a high point with the
publication of Trainspotting appears to have reached a new stage
following devolution and the establishment of Scotland's first parliament
in nearly three hundred years. Scotland's recently changed political
situation suggests a number of questions regarding the present and future
of contemporary Scottish fiction. Has devolution changed the implied role
of the Scottish fiction writer and the reception of and/or market for
contemporary Scottish fiction? What part, if any, does recent Scottish
fiction play in the forming, or questioning, of a national political

Contemporary Lesbian Fiction
 
Participants sought for a roundtable discussion on Contemporary Lesbian Fiction for the Society for the Study of American Women Writers conference to be held in Philadelphia, Nov. 8-11, 2006. The purpose of the discussion is to offer a general overview of major issues, themes, and trends in post-lesbian-feminist fiction (from about the mid-1980s to the present.) Topics including comparisons of multiple authors, discussion of mainstream publishing and/or small lesbian presses, or works by lesbians of color are especially welcome. Symposium on Science Fiction and Fantasy will be held February 16–18,
2006, on the Provo campus of Brigham Young University.

We are especially interested in papers in the following areas:
    • Literary criticism/analysis of sf&f and related literature
(medieval, renaissance, mythology, magic realism, etc.)
    • Science and technology (especially new or unusual)
    • Analysis of sf&f relating to poetry and/or theatre
    • Mormon culture, literature, and society in relation to sf&f

Contributors are sought for the above book which aims to analyse the genre
in an accessible and student-friendly manner. In particular, contributors
are needed who are able to write on literature post-1930 to the present
day. Essay topics include:

Author biographies and bibliographies
Analyses of short stories and novellas
Literary themes and terms

Contributors will be asked to write short essays (500-1000 words) to be
submitted by 10 August 2005.

Suitably qualified graduate students are welcome.
