This panel seeks any and all papers related to Asian literature, especially in relation to this year's theme of sight, visuality, and ways of seeing. 

Individual paper presentations will be between 15 and 20 minutes long. Please submit proposals via the online system by May 21, 2017. The PAMLA 2017 Conference will be held at the lovely Chaminade University of Honolulu (with the official conference hotel being the Ala Moana) from Friday, November 10 to Sunday, November 12.

Concept Note

Ecocriticism was inaugurated around 1980s as a result of environment revolution that had begun around 1960s after the publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring. It gives importance to the relationship between human beings and nature, how are human beings affecting nature and vice versa. With time, it impacted in various other disciplines as well thereby evolving as an umbrella term. As an earth-centered approach, it intersected environment and culture and calling for collaboration between natural scientists, writers, literary critics, anthropologists, historians, and more.

Journal of Foreign Languages and Cultures (CN43-1537/H), established in 2016, is a peer-reviewed journal published twice a year. The journal publishes research articles, reviews, and interviews. Its purpose is to further multi- and interdisciplinary analyses of research that explores scholarship in different languages and cultures. The journal invites contributions, in English, from authors in all relevant scholarly disciplines related to the study of linguistics, literature and culture and translation. Journal of Foreign Languages and Cultures has an international standing, attracting submissions and participation from all countries in the world. The Lincoln Humanities Journal is requesting submissions for its 5th special issue, to be published in December 2017, on the topic of Strangers, Foreigners and Aliens. Contributors are invited to examine (a) the issue of otherness as a philosophical and existential condition; (b) the reality and representations of immigrants and foreigners in the political discourse, the arts, the humanities, the media and the social sciences; (c) the ethical, cultural, political, and social ambivalence toward immigrants; and (d) the legal processes (local, national, international) by which people are made to feel outsiders / insiders.

A.K. Ramanujan in a poem entitled “Small-scale Reflections on a Great House” had mused, “Sometimes I think that nothing/that ever comes into this house/goes out. Things come in every day/to lose themselves among other things/lost long ago among/other things lost long ago”. The description may seem oddly apt for the field of postcolonial studies which continues to search for new shores even as some of the concerns of the past begin to fade with inevitable processes of history. Even as the field remains committed to a quest for emancipation from violence and discrimination and deprivation, caused by the forces of race, class, gender, sexuality and a number of other factors, the modalities continue to change and the boundaries begin to blur.

A peer-reviewed journal of international scope, Frontiers of Narrative Studies features articles reporting results of research in all branches of narrative studies, in-depth reviews of selected current literature in the field, and occasional guest editorials and reports. Its broad range of scholarship includes narratives across a variety of media, including literary writing, film and television, journalism, and graphic narratives. It welcomes theoretically sophisticated essays that examine narratives of all kinds from a host of critical, interdisciplinary, or cross-cultural perspectives. Particular emphasis is placed upon state-of-the-art research in the field of interdisciplinary narrative inquiries.

The conference will be dedicated to current issues of literature, translation and teaching and learning of different languages.

Academics and university lecturers are cordially invited to present their research regarding current issues of literature, translation and teaching and learning of different languages and dialects in English, Arabic or Persian. Such an approach suggests that a study is no longer limited within a certain field; knowledge from different fields cultivates diversity in a study. Recognizing this trend, the conference organizing committee aims to provide a platform for researchers and scholars from various fields to exchange ideas.

This panel explores the sense of place as part of the indigenous language of American artistic production of Modernism in the context of the European avant-garde. Though U.S. poets and artists were influenced by the formal techniques of Cubism, Futurism, Expressionism, Dadaism and Surrealism, they were also determined to search for the essence of an expressive language that defined its authenticity as opposed to European foreignness. One of their avenues of research was the exploration of the distinctive features of the American soil as a means of contributing novel aspects to modern aesthetics. The genuine character of the environment is closely linked to the strong attachment to rural or urban spaces and the value they acquire for the observer.

A panel on children’s and young adult literature is seeking original papers relating to the subject of the oral tradition and its impact on contemporary children’s or YA lit. Oral influences on any form of media for young people may be explored, including interactions and productions created by adult storytellers and participating child listeners. The Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association 2017 conference will be held at the Davenport Grand Hotel in Spokane, Washington: October 12-14, 2017.
