The defining qualities of trash can change from moment to moment.  Who gets to discard detritus, and who is thrown into to the garbage can? Whether referring to cast-off material or undesirable aesthetics and affects, “trash” is designed, regulated, and disposed of by social hierarchies. Consumer culture manufactures trash–both the literal waste that lingers in landfills and the lowbrow schlock produced by executives in corporate boardrooms. But can trash also refuse Western power structures and the white, masculinist heteronorms inherent to them?

We are seeking proposals focusing on Shakespeare and his time, Shakespeare and/or his peers, the influence of Shakespeare on later works of literature, adaptations of Shakespeare, and other proposals that touch on any aspect of Shakespeare and related topics. As a standing session we welcome paper proposals on a wide variety of topics; however, papers that address the conference theme of "Acting, Roles, Stages" in relation to Shakespeare are particularly welcome.

The Race and Empire Caucus invites submissions for the 2018 ASECS Race and Empire Caucus Graduate Student Essay Prize. The Caucus welcomes essays that are revised versions of papers read at the regional and national conferences of ASECS and its affiliates (including the Society of Early Americanists, Early Caribbean Society, SHARP, NABMSA, etc.) between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018. The prize-winning essay will be considered for publication in the 2018-2019 volume of Studies in Eighteenth-Century Culture, and the prize will be awarded at the 2019 ASECS meeting.
