Call for Papers for a Special Issue of MELUS

Filipino American Literature

Essays are invited for a special issue of MELUS (scheduled for 2004)
that explores current theories and practices in Filipino American
literature. This issue aims to provide a forum for a variety of
scholarly explorations of the Filipino American geographical,
ideological, social, and political spaces, through an analysis of
current literary theories and creative writing that articulates new
problems and paradigms. Essays must provide theoretically informed
analyses of early or contemporary Filipino American literature. We
encourage essays that attend to the complexities of narrative design,
bilingualism, or cultural hybridity, and that discuss Filipino American
texts in the context of the Asian diaspora and/or of other ethnic
American literatures. This issue invites, in particular, essays that
deal with writers and topics that have received little critical
attention: Filipino American poetry, drama, short fiction, and
children’s literature; narrative strategies; biraciality/biculturality;
interethnic relationships; social representation; the bildungsroman;
religion; the sites of Filipino American ethnicity; the historical
development of Filipino American literature and critical approaches;
anthologies; literature and the visual arts; links to Filipino
literature; and pedagogical approaches.

Abstracts (500 words) are due on September 30, 2002.

Final essays (5000-6000 words, MLA Style) are due on March 1, 2003.
