Studies in Theatre and Performance

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

Studies in Theatre and Performance is an academic, refereed journal for
scholars, teachers and practitioners. It explores theatre practice in
articles where methodology, philosophy, history and contemporaneity meet.
Contributions are international and wide-ranging in content. The processes
of making contemporary theatre and performance are at the centre of enquiry.

The journal is a forum to debate the choices which shape practical processes
and to analyse experiments in pedagogy and performance. Features include a
Notes and Queries section, book reviews and occasional supplements such as
playscripts or the documentation of performance projects.

Studies in Theatre and Performance is the official publication of the
Standing Conference of University Drama Departments in the UK. It
incorporates Studies in Theatre Production, which has been a leading forum
for the analysis of theatrical practice, processes and performance for a
decade.

The journal is published three times a year. Volume 21 includes:

· Face Time: Time to Face Realities of Culture Production in the
American University
     Claire Conceison, University of Michigan

· The Sarungano and Shona Storytelling: an African Theatrical Paradigm
                 Kennedy Chinyowa, University of Zimbabwe

· Performance, Memory, Heritage, History, Spectacle: The Iron Ship
                 Baz Kershaw, University of Bristol

· Negotiating Performance Epistemologies: knowledges 'about', 'in' and
'for'
                 Phillip Zarrilli, University of Exeter

Notes for Contributors
Articles can be considered if 2 copies of each manuscript and a disc (Word
compatible) are submitted. Contributions should be typed on one side of the
paper, doubled spaced with ample margins, and bear the title of the
contribution. Each article should be accompanied by an abstract of 100-150
words on a separate sheet. Contributors should follow the MLA system for
citations, and include a bibliography. Articles accepted become the
copyright of the journal unless otherwise specifically agreed.
Non-returnable black and white photographs and clear illustrations can be
reproduced.

Authors should ensure that they supply their name and affiliation as they
wish them to appear in the journal.

Call for papers
The editors welcome submissions of scholarly work to the journal.
Manuscripts should be sent to The Editors, Studies in Theatre and
Performance, Thornlea, New North Road, Exeter, Devon, EX4 4JZ UK. Tel: +44
(0) 1392 264580; Fax: +44 (0) 1392 264594. Enquiries and communication
should be sent by email where possible to: L.A.Wade_at_exeter.ac.uk

On submitting digital contributions to STP
You can now submit 'appropriate' contributions to STP in a digital format.
Such contributions are expected to utilise the particular characteristics of
hypertext and digital images/links etc. and not to be simply a text-based
contribution in Word (or similar) format.
If you wish to submit such a piece for consideration, this is what you need
to do:
a) Write/compose your contribution and load it onto a server at your own
institution; you should not at this stage advertise the URL.
b) Inform STP by letter or e-mail (L.A.Wade_at_exeter.ac.uk) of the URL and
that you wish the piece to be considered for inclusion in a future issue of
STP.
c) Also include a (maximum 200-word) abstract.
d) STP has arranged, in line with the standard system for peer-review and
referee procedures, for your article/item to be considered for
appropriateness of both content and technical aspects. Once this has
happened, STP will inform you of the decision - possibly asking for
emendations, as is the case with all articles.
Once it has been accepted as an STP article, STP will publish both your
abstract and the URL in the appropriate hard-copy issue of STP. Once the
abstract/URL is published in STP, you may advertise the URL more widely,
declaring that it is a digitally-based contribution to STP (naming issue,
volume number etc.).
Please note that, currently, it is necessary for the article to remain on
your institutional server, which must be maintained for access. Negotiations
are currently underway with both PADS and PALATINE with a view to
longer-term collating and archiving of appropriate articles, and further
announcements will be made if and when a satisfactory arrangement has been
arrived at.
The editors of STP and members of the SCUDD-IT Group look forward to seeing
the future development of this new publishing enterprise.

Supplements to Studies in Theatre and Performance
The publication of Rick Mitchell's play, The Composition of Herman Melville,
was the first in a new series of supplements to STP. Intellect Books
(publishers of STP) are interested in developing this series in two distinct
ways: firstly, by the regular publishing of play-texts (this series under
the general editorship of Roberta Mock at the University of Plymouth),
secondly, by the occasional publication of 'scholarly' volumes (under the
general editorship of the journal's editors).
Supplements will be distributed with copies of STP as
previously. Any proposals for the publication of supplements of either kind
will be considered by the general editors, who can be reached by e-mail as
follows:
For 'scholarly' volumes: L.A.Wade or P.W.Thomson_at_exeter.ac.uk
            For play-texts, Roberta Mock: any_at_lusty-juventus.demon.co.uk
Already planned is a supplement edited from Queen Margaret University
College. The general editors will be happy to advise any enquirers.
