AMERICAN REGIONAL CULTURES-A Greenwood Reference Series

The Greenwood Publishing Group, an award-winning publisher of reference
books and monographs, is developing a major new reference series that will
provide an invaluable and unprecedented tool in the field of Regional
Studies. The series will be marketed to college, high school, and public
libraries throughout the United States, and will be offered for sale as
individual volumes and as a complete set.

I am seeking contributors for the volume dealing with the New England
region, made up of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode
Island and Vermont, for each of the following topical chapters:

Architecture,
Fashion,
Film,
Folklore,
Language (not literature),
Music,
Religion,
and
Sports/Recreation

Each chapter will be an essay that identifies and examines that many
significant elements of that particular aspect of regional culture as it has
evolved over time, through the beginning of the 21st century. Thus, these
chapters will seek not to impose a homogenized identity upon each region
but, rather, to develop a synthesis, or thematically arranged discussion of
the diverse elements of each region. For example, in The Southwest volume,
the "Folklore" chapter could discuss such sub-genres as Native American
folktales, legends of settlers and cowboys, stories of UFO landings, Texas
"tall tales," etc. In the Pacific volume, the "Music" chapter could discuss
indigenous tribal music, the "Seattle Sound" (or "grunge" rock), and music
influenced by Asian cultures. In The Mid-Atlantic Region volume, the
"Ecology & Environment" chapter could discuss wide-ranging topics such the
coastal ecosystems, mountain ridges (Appalachians, Adirondacks, etc.), and
metropolitan areas and the effects of industrial pollution. The discussion
within each chapter should be shaped so that significant aspects of the
region's cultures may be identified with the use of subheadings. Volume
chapters should not be divided rigidly by subsections according to
state-with an exception in cases where particular states are known for
distinguishing features within a particular regional discipline. In
general, the allocation of states listed above is merely intended to insure
volume manageability, and to insure that the cultural contributions of every
state are covered by this series.

Each volume will also include an introductory essay, chapter bibliographies,
and a subject index. Each essay should be 15,000 words.

Let me know which topic(s) you would be interested in working on, a
prospective outline, and your previous work within the field. New scholars
are encouraged to apply.

There will be a $400 payment for each completed accepted entry.

First drafts will be due by June 2003.
