CFP: From the Global Ilo: Teaching Chinua Achebe Across Cultures and Social
Experiences

The notion of a globalized world has gained currency in the last ten years
or so. Often punctuated with ideas of sameness, applied to literary
criticism and pedagogy, this notion reduces the tributaries of literary
cultures into what we may refer to as the world’s literary playground--the
ilo. But does this collectivized literary space--the world’s literary
ilo--demolish differences in seeing, reading, imagining, or teaching the
postcolonial text? In other words, is this space uncolonized by selfhood and
distance from the source of postcolonial literary products? Can this space
be ever homogenous as the collectivized/global ilo suggests?

We are planning to publish a volume of essays on the works of the Nigerian
novelist, Chinua Achebe, dealing with the issues outlined above. Essays on
the pedagogical (with actual classroom strategies of un-parking texts in
different cultural/political contexts across the globe) and cultural
critiques of private and public encounters with the vast range of Chinua
Achebe’s works--prose, poetry and critical essays--are welcomed. Essays
should be between 4000 and 7000 words and should reach the editor on or
before June 15, 2003. Please send queries, abstracts, or full papers via
email to:
