CALL FOR PAPERS ON TEACHING A FAREWELL TO ARMS: Contributors are sought for
a collection of essays on teaching A Farewell to Arms. The book will be
part of a University of Idaho Press series including The Teaching of
Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, edited by Peter Hays and due out in spring
2003. Contributors should have experience teaching the novel; we hope that
secondary school as well as undergraduate and graduate classrooms can all be
represented.

Essays should be pedagogical how-to articles directed at teachers of
Hemingway. Essays in the collection should spell out, in a conversational
writing style, what exercises, questions, audiovisual resources, and
Internet sites the writer uses in the classroom to help students grapple
with this novel. Essays should offer useful, practical advice for working
teachers and might include course syllabi, handouts, and sample exam
questions. The ideal length for essays would be about 15-20 pages.

Those interested should contact Lisa Tyler, professor of English at Sinclair
Community College in Dayton, Ohio, at Lisa.Tyler_at_sinclair.edu, (937)
512-2250, or Sinclair Community College, 444 West Third Street, Dayton, OH
45440, with details about their experience teaching the novel along with a
brief description of the nature of the proposed essay. Deadline is July 15,
2003.
