Original essays are invited for a collection tentatively entitled “Rhetorics
of Place.”

The editors of this collection believe that the concept of “place” operates
at the crossroads of current social, political, economic, and environmental
issues. As educators we also believe that the exploration of “place”
provides the opportunity for bridging academic knowledge and students’
everyday experiences. With this in mind we encourage submissions from a
range of disciplines and perspectives in the hopes of developing a reader
designed to provide an interdisciplinary overview of the current discussions
concerning “place” for the college classroom.

Possible topics:
Exploration and Contestation of Key Terms/Concepts
Ethnographies of Place
Representations of Place
Writing Places
Creating Local Knowledge
Pedagogy and Place
Urban Places
Wild Places
Place in Film
Virtual and Imagined Places
Gender, Class and Race Informed Readings of Place
Place in Literature
Global Forces and Local Places
Social Control of Place/s
Sacred Place
Space vs. Place
Colonial/Postcolonial Place
Border Places
Public Places

We are particularly interested in essays that integrate practice and theory.

Please feel free to explore and experiment -- both in form and in content.
The deadline for submission is August 1, 2003.
Essays should be 12-25 pages, in MLA format.
Please submit essays and proposals electronically
