Int the context of globalization, in the context of the
Israel-Palestine conflict what can the author cinema do and what does
it actually do ? How is the cinema of Amos Gitaï opening a cinematic
way of reflection and dialogue ? These are the opening questions of
this special issue dedicated to explore all the aspects of Amos
Gitaï's cinema. Having done almost a film every year for the last
thirty years, from documentary to fiction, inspired by the day to day
life to the legends and mythology of the Jewish traditions; from the
first settlers and immigrants to the laïque and orthodoxe residents
of today Israel; from the cohabitation and friendship with the
Palestinian neighbors to the wars, expropriations and colonialism,
Amos Gitaï explore the realities of Israel-Palestine life of the last
century and today.
Adopting a critical approach searching for the understanding of the
diversity of individual and collective points of view, each film is
an invitation to reflection, tolerance and acknowledgement towards
the others. By a cinematic aesthetic of the Sequence Shot (Plan
séquence), Gitaï explores these issues and questions through the
sensation of time (history past and present, length), space (in terms
of places, architectural perceptions, territorial identification) and
the interaction between the individual and the collectivity by
narrative personal journeys questioning these relationships of all
This study of Amos Gitaï' cinema will then explore the commitments,
critical reflection and perspectives taken through these films toward
the question of identity (as individuals and groups), history, exile,
nationalism and globalism. How far is he going and is it enough or
too much ? What is the place of the individual into these collective
conflicts and lives ? What is the role of the intellectual-artist
toward the Israel-Palestine question as well as toward the cinema of
today ? How is the author-director' gaze is offering something
specific in relation to the mediated images and the commercial movies
