Call for Contributions and Ideas
MLA Volume on Teaching North American Environmental Literature

For the MLA's Options for Teaching series, the Publications Committee has approved development of the volume
Teaching North American Environmental Literature as the first of several planned books devoted to teaching
environmental literature. The book's editor, Fred Waage (with associate editors Laird Christensen, Mark Long, and
Kevin O'Donnell), is seeking contributions and ideas for practical and theoretical essays on teaching literature in the
United States, Canada, and Mexico.

As currently conceived, the volume has four projected parts: (1) backgrounds to teaching North American
literature; (2) mapping North American environmental literatures (i.e., all periods and varieties of US, Canadian, and
Mexican environmental literature as well as literatures that cross national boundaries or address border issues); (3)
teaching North American environmental literature (e.g., ecocomposition, poetry, fiction, nonfiction; interdisciplinary,
cross-cultural, and issue-oriented approaches; non-classroom education); and (4) resources for teaching North
American environmental literature (e.g., bibliographies, nonprint media, Internet materials).

Collaborative authorship is especially encouraged for interdisciplinary, international, and inter-cultural contributions.

If you are interested in contributing to this volume, please send in a page or two your ideas for an essay, along with
a curriculum vitae, preferably as a Word document attachment, to <mailto:waage_at_mail.etsu.edu>. Submissions may
also be mailed to Fred Waage, Department of English, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN 37614.

Preliminary inquiries, requests for tentative table of contents, comments, suggestions for contributors, and so forth
are also welcome.

The deadline for submitting ideas and proposals is 1 December 2003.

Also see the proposal web site, and a working table of contents, at http://www.etsu.edu/writing/tnael/
