Special Issue — Call for Papers

Lawrence Durrell: Text, Hypertext, Intertext

The editors of Agora seek papers relating to the work of Lawrence Durrell
for a special issue. Submissions may address any aspect of Durrell's works
or of his circle, but those that focus on theoretically informed readings of
the textuality of Durrell’s writings are particularly welcome (contexts,
hypertexts, paratexts, print history, and so on), as are papers that take
advantage of the electronic medium.

This issue aims to address trends in textual studies; notions of
hypertextuality as a means to reading print texts; reading as a creative
act; intertextuality from Kristeva and after; paratexts, peritexts, and
epitexts; and other creative means to reading Durrell’s works. Also welcome
are close readings, interdisciplinary analyses, socio-cultural readings,
comparative analyses, psychoanalytic readings, and innovative work that
addresses major themes in Durrell’s writings. Authors might consider
landscape as a parallel text, biographical issues of influence, and
translation, among other major topics. Examinations of Durrell’s poetry are
also encouraged, as are analyses of previously unstudied works. Please
submit papers by October 15, 2003; email submissions are welcome.

Agora is comprised of an international board of Associate Editors. The
journal is indexed in the MLA Bibliography and the Canadian Literary
Periodical Index; it is also archived in the National Library of Canada.
Submissions are welcomed from (post)graduate students and new scholars in
any disciplinary field.

Manuscripts, with a 200-250 word abstract, are accepted in either hard-copy
or electronic format, although accepted papers must be submitted
electronically in accordance with current MLA guidelines and the Agora
on-line style sheet. The author’s name should not appear on the manuscript,
but on a separate cover page, or for e-mail submissions, in the body of the
e-mail stating name, mailing address, e-mail address and the title of the
paper. Electronic submissions may be sent on a 3.5 diskette or via e-mail
<agora_at_mail.arts.ualberta.ca> with the subject heading "Submission."
Documents should be formatted in MS Word, HTML, or Rich Text Format. Print
submissions may be sent in duplicate to:
