CFP: Umbr(a): War and Psychoanalysis (12/1/03; journal issue)
Umbr(a): A Journal of the Unconscious 2004 (12/01/03; journal issue; war
and psychoanalysis)
Call for Papers, UMBR(a) 2004
WAR
We are at war. Since the fate of psychoanalysis has been formed by previous
wars, we believe the present configuration of global conflicts to be one of
these key moments in its history which simultaneously provides the object
of psychoanalysis and its living context. In the next issue of UMBR(a): A
Journal of the Unconscious, we propose to take up the relationship of world
war to the very beginnings of psychoanalysis, and war's relationship to
knowledge or truth, as well as the psychoanalytic concepts of war, the
enemy, aggressivity, rivalry, and violence.
We also propose to analyze the new discourses on war and the enemy that
have emerged in the aftermath of 9/11 and the latest war with Iraq. On a
daily basis we have witnessed a complex deployment of metonymic slippages
in the official U.S. discourse on the war against "our enemies," in which
terms such as "weapons of mass destruction," "democracy," "liberation,"
"terrorist/terrorism," "war criminal," and so forth constantly shift in
meaning (or perhaps, are evacuated of meaning). We hope to begin a process
of unraveling this official discourse through psychoanalysis as we
encounter the face of "twenty-first-century warfare" for the first time and
ask the question whether it is possible to hijack the moralistic-political
vocabulary of war and enemy for the purposes of radical politics.
We are currently seeking articles that engage this complex of issues.
Submissions should be 1,500-6,000 words in length, must be submitted on a
3.5 diskette (MSWord) and in hard copy, and must be received by no later
than December 1, 2003. Please send all submissions to:
