CALL FOR PAPERS

VOLUME TITLE:=20
Pariahs of reason. Sarah Kane's torture chambers (provisional)

VOLUME OUTLINE:
=20
Since she set a fuss in English theatre and society by her most violent =
1995 debut Blasted Sarah Kane never really disappeared from the =
spotlights. In only a few years' time she wrote five plays and a =
screenplay, and at the fifth anniversary of her death her plays are =
still widely performed all over Europe. This volume basically consists =
of three major parts. In a first section contributions will be included =
on the overall 'Zeitgeist' that contextualises Kane and her work. =
Articles on the influences on the playwright, her contemporaries and the =
sociological background as such are welcomed. As Kane was launched to =
fame primarily due to the violence she directly brought to the stage, =
shocking most theatre critics and public alike, in the second section we =
will investigate the function of cruelty and violence. How gratuitous is =
Kane's depiction of these horrific atrocities; how should we deal with =
the overt (re-)presentation of the most gruesome scenes? The volume's =
third section focuses on the more formal aspects of Kane's oeuvre. =
Despite her very short career as a playwright, style and language of her =
plays differ a great deal, and their unconventionality has equally upset =
a lot of spectators, rocking to its foundations the well-established =
well-made play in England.

One-page abstracts for papers of approximately 5000 words that fit in =
with any of these topics are welcomed.=20
