CFP: Reviews for "Extreme Mainstream" (12/1/03; journal issue)
Deadline for Submissions: December 1, 2003
The Iowa Journal of Cultural Studies, a refereed academic journal produced
at the University of Iowa, is dedicated to publishing the best work in
cultural studies from both established scholars and emerging critics. We
hope to avoid rigid orthodoxies and publish the best of both theoretical
work and applied criticism on a range of issues. Our goal is to present
the best in contemporary criticism while fostering conversations across
disciplinary and ideological divides.
We are currently seeking reviews and/or review essays for our upcoming
issue, "Extreme Mainstream," guest-edited by David Wittenberg. For this
special issue, we are interested in reviews of recent texts that examine
the meaning, value, and/or critical difficulty of the most mainstream
elements of culture, in any category, genre, period, or
location. Possible topics include, but are not limited to, recent texts
focusing on big-budget film, popular music, tourism, sitcoms, Starbucks,
syndicated news, the Internet, talk radio, fast food, Wal-Mart, Nike, AOL,
national elections, fairs and expositions, papal masses, cars, crusades,
cell phones, "empire," "grass roots," war, religion, hairstyles, slang,
marriage, monarchy and pornography.
A review of a single text should be approximately 2000-2500 words; review
essays should review individual texts within the same word limit and in
total be no longer than 20 double-spaced pages. Submission of review
essays should be prepared using the MLA Style Manual.
We ask that you notify the review editor (by e-mail, see below) of your
plans to submit a review or review essay and the text(s) you intend to
review no later than November 10. Reviews must then be submitted for
consideration no later than December 1, 2003. After notification, two
hard copies and a disk, preferably in Microsoft Word (for Windows), should
be provided upon submission to the address below. Reviews and review essays
cannot be returned unless a self-addressed envelope with US postage is
provided.
