TOPIC, the annual of Washington and Jefferson College, is soliciting
original critical essays for the Fall 2004 issue on J. K. Rowling's Harry
Potter novels.

We are particularly interested in essays that (1) discuss her most recent
volume, HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, (2) analyze the film
adaptations of the novels, and (3) study the impact of Rowling's books on
writing for children (and perhaps even writing by children).

All essays will be subject to review by the seven members of the editorial
board. They should be well researched, carefully documented, and
intelligible to those in other disciplines.

Essays that appeal to both the general, college-educated reader and the
academic are especially desirable. TOPIC values clear and graceful writing,
and our mission is to reach across disciplinary boundaries and beyond the
walls of the ivory tower.

Length: 4000 words, including notes.
Style: Chicago, 15th edition.
Deadline: 1 March 2004. Attachments by email are acceptable.
